Roy Brown Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John M. Ireland & Son Funeral Home and Chapel on Oct. 9, 2025.
Roy Elson Brown, Jr., a devoted Christian, husband, father, grandpa and proud veteran, passed away suddenly on Sunday, October 5, 2025 at the age of 74. Roy lived his life devoted to God, family and country.
He was born on June 28, 1951 in Hinton, OK. The son of Roy E. Brown, Sr. and Betty Sue Brown. He grew up and attended school in Clinton, OK. John 15:13 says, "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends."
In 1970 at the age of 19, during the midst of the Vietnam War, Roy joined the U.S. Army with the specific intent to fly Cobra gunships for the 101st Airborne in support of his country, where he received a Bronze Star, 7 Air Medals, and many other distinguished commendations.
After returning from Vietnam in 1971 he joined the Oklahoma Army National Guard where he flew the OH-58 Kiowa, UH-1 Huey and CH 47D Chinook helicopters, before transitioning to fixed wing aircraft where he flew the C-12 Huron, C-23 Sherpa, and the Spartan C-27J.
Roy deployed with the Oklahoma National Guard in 2005 and 2011 serving in both Operation Iraqi Freedom in Balad, Iraq and Operation Enduring Freedom in Bagram, Afghanistan. Over his exceptional 42 year career he held many leadership roles rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5, earning the distinction of becoming a Master Army Aviator with over 6,000 flight hours. He retired in July 2012, having earned numerous additional medals and awards.
In his civilian life, Roy attended college at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, graduating "summa cum laude" with a degree in Sociology and Political Science. He was hired as the Property Control Manager for the University of Oklahoma, where he met his wife, Bobbie.
Roy was a pioneer when it came to technology. In 1979, he purchased one of the first home computers and taught himself how to develop software. He went on to start Micro Systems Designs, followed by Micro Computers Systems, Inc., and finally Compatible Peripherals Unlimited, Inc., where he developed computer software programs for several different industries, including oil and gas, insurance, and churches. He was always at the forefront of technology and was looking forward to his first home robot.
Roy was an expert do-it-yourselfer. He believed you only hired someone to do jobs you absolutely could not learn to do yourself. He looked forward to taking trips in his motorhome "Jolene". The more family members he could crowd inside, the more he enjoyed it. He loved his church and its congregation. He looked forward to teaching the adult Sunday school class and spent hours preparing for it each week.
However, Roy's greatest love was his family. He was very proud of Eric and Sara who followed in his footsteps to serve in the military. Eric becoming an Army aviator who flew many of the same aircraft he had flown and also rising to the same rank of CW5, retiring after 26 years then joining American Airlines. Sara serving as a Staff Sergeant in the Air National Guard as a safety specialist, which led to her college degree and her occupation in safety today. But, he loved no one more than his 4 grandchildren, Jackson, Logan, Ezra and Lexi. There were not enough hours in the day to do everything he wanted to do with them. He was so proud of their good grades and sports abilities, rarely missing a soccer or baseball game. But he especially strived to nurture their love for Jesus. He made sure the little boys were in Sunday school every Sunday and attended Awanas on Wednesday nights.
Roy is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years Bobbie Sue of Moore, son Roy Eric Brown, III and wife Sarah of Norman. Daughter Sara Michelle Miers and husband Justin of Moore. Grandsons, Jackson and Logan Miers, Roy Ezra Brown IV, and granddaughter Lexi DeLaPena. His sister Eva Hecker of Oklahoma City. Brother Roxie Terry and wife Debbie of Waurika. Sister Ronda Kiefer and husband Larry of Yukon. He also leaves behind many other loving family members and friends.
Roy is preceded in death by his father Roy E. Brown, Sr., his mother Betty Sue Terry, and brother, Roger Dean Terry. Luke 23:43 says, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise."
Although "today" has come too soon for us, and our hearts are broken, we know Roy is rejoicing in Heaven with our Lord, and we will see him again one day soon.
A service honoring the life of Roy will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at Heartland Freewill Baptist Church in Oklahoma City at 10:00 a.m. followed by a military helicopter flyover. Interment, with full military honors, will be at Fort Sill National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to Heartland Freewill Baptist Church children's ministry at 17601 S. Santa Fe Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73170
