Roy Chaffin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rush Funeral Home - Oakdale on Feb. 12, 2026.
Funeral services for Mr. Roy Chaffin will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Friendship Baptist Church, Pine Prairie, with Reverends Brian Thomas, Barry Gautreaux, and Ervin Goodman and Speaker Tommy Fuselier officiating. Interment will follow in Friendship Cemetery, Pine Prairie, under the direction of Rush Funeral Home, Oakdale.

Mr. Chaffin, 74, of Turkey Creek, entered eternal rest on Monday, February 9, 2026, in his residence surrounded by his loving family.

Lucian Roy Chaffin was born on July 17, 1951, at Ville Platte Hospital to Lucian Leonard Chaffin and Lillie Goodman Chaffin. One of seven siblings, he grew up surrounded by a large, loving family, including his grandparents Harvey and Ethel Goodman and Leonard and Ollie Chaffin. He spent his childhood making fond memories on what is now known as Music Lane in Pine Prairie, Louisiana. During his early years, he developed a love for reading and history and graduated from Pine Prairie High School in 1969.

After earning his diploma, Roy worked on a sulphur mining rig in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. He later studied machining for a year at TH Harris Trade School in Opelousas before discovering his passion for carpentry under the guidance of Mr. Russell Fontenot of Ville Platte. In 1974, he built his parents' home, the first house he ever constructed, without the assistance of a contractor. His craftsmanship quickly became well known throughout the area as he built numerous homes for local families. The first home he built for himself was completed in 1993 in Pine Prairie, and he also built the home where he and his wife currently reside.

Music has been a defining part of Roy's life. A devoted Swamp Pop musician, he began performing in nightclubs in 1977 and joined a band with Elwood Charles in 1980. He later formed his own group, Roy Chaffin and The Bayou Boogie Band, performing throughout the Alexandria and Leesville areas at venues such as the American Legion Hall, Moose Lodge, VFW Hall, and Elk's Club. Over the years, he has played at countless weddings, hometown festivals, and community events, including the Boggy Bayou Festival in Pine Prairie. During the early years of the festival, when organizers could not afford a sound company, Roy generously provided his personal PA system so other musicians could perform. He has collaborated with multiple bands, including Knight Train Band, The Cartoons, and the Paul & Pete Band.

In 1998, Roy recorded a solo album featuring respected Louisiana musicians Clint West and Warren Storm. The record included his most popular song, "You're So Easy to Love." Throughout his career, he formed friendships with Swamp Pop legends such as Johnnie Allan, Tommy McClain, Rod Bernard, and Wayne and Peggy Foreman. His contributions to the genre earned him a place in the Swamp Pop Museum, and he was a frequent performer at the annual Swamp Pop Reunion in Ville Platte. He has also performed for Governor Jeff Landry and State Senator Heather Cloud.

Roy married Sue Fontenot on July 17, 1993. Outside of music and carpentry, he enjoys hunting and fishing and is especially proud of the ten-point, 205-pound buck he hunted with his son-in-law, Dustin Fontenot, at Three Rivers. He also enjoyed cooking and attending suppers with his favorite buddies.

A beloved figure in the Pine Prairie community, Lucian Roy Chaffin is known for his craftsmanship, musical talent, and generous spirit. His life reflects hard work, creativity, deep family roots, and a lasting commitment to his community and Louisiana's Swamp Pop heritage.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucian and Lillie Chaffin; two brothers, Wayne Chaffin and Vernon Chaffin; and two brothers-in-law, Vernon Fontenot, Jr., and Paul McFarlin.

Those left to mourn his loss and cherish his memory include his loving wife of thirty-three years, Sue Chaffin of Turkey Creek; six children, Lucian Roy Chaffin, Jr. (Juanita) of Oakdale, Brandi Thompson (Chris) of Pine Prairie, Justin Chaffin of Bayou Chicot, Megan Aucoin (Pat) of Ville Platte, Heidi Causey (Darren) of Turkey Creek, and Christy Fontenot (Dustin) of Bayou Chicot; one brother, George Chaffin (Mary) of Ville Platte; three sisters, Bettie Stanley of Pine Prairie, Linda Fontenot of Pine Prairie, and Barbara Fuselier (Tommy) of Pine Prairie; one aunt, Jenny Clark O'Neal (Shanky) of Pine Prairie; two sisters-in-law, Rita Chaffin of Lafayette, and Linda Chaffin of Eunice; twelve grandchildren, Savana, Elijah, Kelsie, Brock, Erica, Alaina, Kobe, Hayden, Gauge, Alexi, Ella, and Shelby; and four great grandchildren.

A time of visitation will be held at Friendship Baptist Church, Pine Prairie, on Thursday, February 12, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at the church, on Friday, February 13, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. until time of service.
