Roy Lee Cooper, age 89, of Weaverville, went Home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 12th, 2024. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Sid and Goldie Peterson Cooper. He was also preceded in death by sister-in-law, Charlotte Cooper, as well as all his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law on his wife's side of the family.
He was a Deacon at Unity Baptist Church. He was an avid reader, coin and knife collector, and UNC Tarheels fan. He enjoyed being outdoors as well, hunting and fishing. Roy loved his family dearly and will be remembered as a man who showed the world his kindness.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Laura Phillips Cooper; three daughters: Myra Hammonds of Weaverville, Lisa Presley and husband, Ronnie of Asheville, and Teresa Norton and husband, Jeremy of Marshall; three grandchildren: Dustin (Ashley), Jennifer (Dustin) and Brittany; three great-grandchildren: Harper, Grayson and Isaac; three brothers: Bill Cooper and wife, Carlie, of Missouri, J.B. Cooper and wife, Becky, of Johnson City, TN, and Robert Cooper of Erwin, TN; and one sister, Geneva Atkins and husband, Willard, of Erwin, TN. He is survived as well by numerous extended family members.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17th in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Dustin Hughes and Rev. Nathaniel Ayers will officiate. Graveside services will follow in the chapel as well. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1 p.m. prior to the funeral services.
