Roy Newton Moore, age 88, resident of the Liberty Chapel Community in McCool, MS, departed this life for his Heavenly home on July 30, 2025. A faithful husband, caring father, and loving grandfather, Roy was a Christian gentleman with a strict moral compass who diligently prayed for his family, friends, and community. A strict rule follower, he never said a bad word in anger or drove above 54 mph on the Natchez Trace, and as far as he knew, neither did his children or grandchildren. Roy was a member of Berea Baptist Church in McCool, where through the years he served in many capacities, including as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. Additionally, Roy was ordained as a minister in later life and volunteered as a chaplain at Baptist Memorial Hospital.

Born on May 7, 1937 in Leake County, Mississippi, Roy’s strong work ethic was forged as a child raised in an itinerant farming family, picking cotton as he grew up in Neshoba and Leake Counties. Upon graduation from Sebastopol High School in 1955, he served three years in the US Army. After his service ended, Roy built cabinets and wooden molds that produced many of the concrete blocks used in construction of the hospitals in Jackson. He later moved his family to Attala County, and he worked in factories for several decades as a quality control and industrial engineer technician. Roy taught himself to wire and plumb a house, overhaul an engine, and many other skills by studying basic Sears how-to manuals. He defiantly kept his tractor working strong, long after family members asked him to stop using it. After retirement and years of raising cattle, Roy returned to his first love of carpentry and opened a furniture shop where he built cabinets, invented new kinds of tables, and created anything his wife needed to make her life easier.

Roy was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Carolyn Veazey Moore, infant daughter Wanda Fay Moore, parents Luther and Amanda Hicks Moore, and sister Ruth Moore Riley. Roy leaves to mourn his passing his son, Dr. Michael (Mindy) Moore, daughter, Cindy (John) Tapp, and grandchildren, Benjamin Tapp, Sarah Tapp, Mercedes (Alex) Sellers, and Madigan Moore. Roy also leaves behind his brother, Jeff Moore, who kindly adopted Roy and Carolyn’s loyal dog, Russ. In addition, Roy leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude to Anita (Scott) Mitchell and Doyle (Karen) Veazey and Rachel Veazey, who were faithful to visit and assist Roy & Carolyn over the years, and Bill Moak, whose valuable assistance allowed Roy to maintain his independence until his physical health failed him.

Receiving of friends will be held at Jordan Funeral Home in Kosciusko, MS, 5-7 pm on Friday, August 1, 2025. Graveside service will be held at Liberty Chapel Cemetery in McCool at 10 am on Saturday, August 2, 2025, with the Rev. Tommy Allen officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Baptist Children's Village of Clinton, MS P.O. Box 27 Clinton, MS 39060.
