Roy Erwin Phillips of Hockley, Texas passed away on Friday, January 12, 2024 after a long battle with Parkinson's, at the age of 76.

Roy was born to the late Polly Eason Phillips and Joe Pierce Phillips on March 7, 1947 in Tyler, Texas. He was a graduate of John Tyler High School Class of '65 and obtained degrees from both Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas and University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, Louisiana. Roy served in the US Army from February of 1968 until December of 1970.

He met his wife, Patricia Vincent Phillips in 1969 in Lafayette, La. and became engaged shortly afterwards. They were married on April 2, 1970, in Nurnberg, Germany during his tour of duty there. After his discharge from the Army and earning his degree from USL, the couple settled in Lafayette, La. After college, he went to work for Amoco in Lafayette then later for BP in New Orleans, La. After retirement from BP, he continued to work consulting with BP and later Production Management Industries (PMI) in Morgan City, La.

Roy made many friends along the way and enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with them, especially the tournaments on Toledo Bend.

After his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed fishing and traveling, visiting with friends and spending time with his beloved family. In 2013, they moved to Hockley, Texas from Slidell, Louisiana to be near their family and enjoy watching his grandsons grow up. Roy loved attending all of their sporting events and activities and taking them on fishing trips each summer. He was a very proud "PawPaw".

Roy was preceded in death by his mother, Polly Eason Phillips, his father, Joe Pierce Phillips, his brother James (Jimmy) Phillips. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia Vincent Phillips, daughter, Jennifer Phillips Rachal (his Pride and Joy) and her husband, Lloyd, grandsons, Walter Lloyd Rachal III (Wally) and Alexander Michael Rachal (Alex).

He is also survived by his siblings, Martha Batterton and Charles Phillips (wife, Anna) and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation for Roy will be held Friday, February 2nd, 2024 from 10a.m to 11a.m at Veterans Funeral Services, 10567 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77038. A committal service with Military Honors will immediately follow at the Houston National Cemetery.

We were in the same 1st grade class together at Douglas Elementary School in Tyler, Texas. I moved to another school in 2nd grade. We continued to attend the same church together and we would go to each others homes for Sunday afternoon. Roys family moved from Tyler to Kilgore, Texas around the 4th grade.

In the summer before our 10th grade, Roy and Ms Polly moved back to Tyler and we reconnected. Roy attended John Tyler high school and I Robert E Lee. Ms Poly worked at night so I would stay at their house a lot of weekend nights.
We were running buddies and did a lot of things together all of our high school years. My girl friend & future wife also attended John Tyler. We all attened a lot of the J Tyler events. We all started Tyler Jr College the same year.

All thru high school Roy & I both worked at part time jobs. We both worked ahd and played hard. Roy worked in at a meat market and had to be at work around 4am as I recall. Many nights we stayed out all night and go directly to work at 4. At 7am he would take me to where I worked and then go back to work.

Roy's uncle had a farm near Garden Valley. TX that had an old 2 room house on it that was falling down. We fixed it up and made to into a hunting cabin. We would go there on weekends and hunt and hang out. Some time it was just the two of us and other times we had others with us. Great place to teenagers to stay out of trouble.

During these years togther we were more like brothers than friends as we both support one another and would do anything for each other. Roy was very protective of Ms Polly and would do anything for her. I always respected his dedication to her and their relationship. When he was on the army, I was in college in Denton, TX. He had Marian and I pick him up at Dallas airport and take him to Tyler to surprise Ms Polly. It was in the middle of the night when we got there and surprised her.

Marian & I were excited to learn of Roy and Pat's marriage. Without a doubt the best decision he ever made by far!

God bless Pat and Jennifer....
