Roy "Papa" Lee Pridgen, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and patriot, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2024, in
Howell, Michigan. Born on October 1, 1943, in Ocilla, Georgia, Roy's journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and an unwavering spirit of generosity.
Roy is survived by the love of his life, his wife Mary Jo, whom he married on March 27, 1965. Together, they built a life filled with joy and cherished memories. Roy was a guiding light to his children, Jeffrey (Diane) Pridgen, Amy (John) Kostesich, Julie (Patrick) Harms, and Steven (Tanya) Pridgen. His legacy continues through his 12 grandchildren, Elena (Miguel) Salazar, Raquel (Erik) White, Alexis (Cole) Hanson, Clare (Benjamin) Radcliffe, James (Rachel) Kostesich, Mary Kostesich, Leo (Kayla) Kostesich, Duke Harms, Wyatt Harms, Cole Harms, Josie Harms, and Anneliese Pridgen, as well as his 3 great-grandchildren, Mikey Salazar, Desi White, and Eli White, all of whom he adored. Roy's faithful dog, Bo, was a constant companion and brought him much comfort and happiness.
Predeceased by his parents, George and Lucille Pridgen, and his 12 siblings, Roy was the last leaf on his family tree, leaving behind a forest of memories and stories that will be recounted for generations.
Roy proudly served his country for 37 years in the United States Air Force. His military career began with 4 years of active duty in California, followed by 33 years in the Selfridge Air National Guard. His service was characterized by honor, discipline, and a deep sense of patriotism. Upon retiring from the Air Force, Roy continued to live by the values instilled in him during his service.
An avid golfer, Roy could often be found on the green, enjoying the game he loved. His passion for the outdoors extended to fishing and camping, activities that allowed him to appreciate nature's beauty and tranquility. Roy was also a voracious reader, always eager to explore new worlds and ideas through the pages of a book.
Roy's curiosity and open mind led him to be a believer in UFOs, a topic that would spark many lively conversations with friends and family. He was a huge Detroit Tigers fan, reveling in the highs and lows of each season with the same unwavering support he gave to all his endeavors.
Above all, Roy cherished the time he spent with his family. He was always there to offer support, guidance, and a listening ear. His role as a grandpa was one he took great pride in, and the moments he shared with his grandchildren were among the happiest of his life.
Those who knew Roy would describe him as loving, generous, and spirited. He approached life with a warm smile and a kind heart, always ready to lend a hand or share a word of encouragement. His presence was a source of comfort and joy to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 24, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with a Rosary beginning at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in
Howell, MI at 10:30 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Livingston County Animal Shelter.
