Joseph Franklin Pridgen, a resident of the Penderlea Community in
Willard, North Carolina, passed away on February 7, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on December 28, 1939, in Wilmington, Joseph led a life marked by dedication, service, and compassion.
Joseph began his career as a skilled Mill Wright at Babcock & Wilcox in Wilmington, where he honed his talents until the plant's closure. He then took his expertise to Butler Larkin Company in Angelica, New York, where his professionalism was well-regarded. Later in life, Joseph returned to Wilmington, where he found his true calling at Coastal Enterprises in Wilmington for the past 20 years. There, he dedicated himself to instructing and guiding children and adults with developmental disabilities, enriching their lives through vocational rehabilitation and helping them secure meaningful employment within the community. He worked 40 hours a week up until he was 80 years old. He loved the disabled adults that he worked with. On many occasions they went to visit him while he was in the hospital.
A proud veteran of the United States Coast Guard, Joseph served his country with honor and integrity, values he carried throughout his life.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Cleo and Myrtle Pridgen; his son, Joel Pridgen; grandson, Michael Buchanan; and granddaughter, Ashley Newsome
He is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Agnes Holloway Pridgen, who was his constant companion and support. His legacy continues through his children-Gail Leddon and husband Josh, Emma Buchanan, Zachary Buchanan, and Jimmy Jones-and his many beloved grandchildren: Chase Gurganious (and wife Lexie), Tyler Gurganious (and wife Elizabeth), Shane Gurganious, Kyle Buchanan, Crystal Buchanan, Frances Buchanan, Logan Jones, Landon Jones, Nick Jones, and Chris Jones. His great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Waylon, Addison, Kinsley, Jaxon, Parker, Cohen, Ryker, and Kouvr, will carry forward his memory. Joseph's special niece, Cynthia Cowan, and his loyal service dog, Bailey, also survive him.
A Memorial Gathering for family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the Wilmington Funeral Chapel.
Joseph Franklin Pridgen will be fondly remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his illustrious career, and his heartfelt contributions to the community. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
