Roy McClellan Summers joined his heavenly family on August 4, 2023, in North Carolina. Roy was 91 years old.
Roy was born March 26, 1932, in Leoti, Kansas to Alice Ruth Elder Summers and Henry David Summers. He was the first of nine children. Roy dearly cherished each one of his parents and siblings. The Summers family provided love, support and laughter to everyone throughout the years.
Roy’s high school sweetheart, Barbara Jean Summers, passed away two years ago. The couple had shared 70 wonderful years of marriage. Together, Roy and Barbara raised three daughters, Debra Desporte and Roxanne Weiss (Ken) of Florida, and Gina Foster of New Jersey. Roy was a devoted husband and loving father. He enjoyed watching his daughters grow and have families of their own.
Roy had a full and illustrious career. He joined the Navy during the Korean War when he was eighteen years old. His hard work and dedication helped promote him as fast as regulations allowed. Later in life, Roy was able to graduate with a BS in 1986 from Thomas Edison State College. This was accomplished by his previous work experience and earned college credits. It was a special day surrounded by his family.
After discharge from the Navy, Roy was hired by RCA. He would help design and supervise navigational systems throughout central U.S. and South America. Roy’s expertise of electronic systems and willingness to learn new job requirements opened doors to travel and a variety of employment in Puerto Rico, Florida, and New Jersey. Even after retirement, Roy continued working as a consultant for a computer programming software system throughout Europe. Not bad for a small-town Kansas country boy.
Roy and Barbara eventually retired to North Carolina, enjoying nature and a beautiful view of the golf course. Throughout the years, Roy and Barbara continued to cherish their lifelong friendships. They stayed in contact with colleagues and high school friends. They were welcomed with loving arms by their new friends and neighbors in Saint Andrews. Roy and Barbara maintained a special bond with Barbara’s brother, Dennis Lee and Sharon Logan, their daughter Christina and her son Matthew. Throughout the years Roy and Denny would enjoy Canadian fishing trips and golfing retreats. He was well loved by many.
Grandad Roy’s guidance, love and support will forever be appreciated and treasured by his grandchildren; Rebecca Logan, Troy Desporte, Rachelle May and Skip Jerema, Katie Bushey and Matt Bushey, Amy Riggs, Ashley Foster-Patterson and Josh Patterson. He was also blessed with great grandchildren; Dylan and Haley Logan, Peyton Desporte, Isabelle Chapman, Zachary Zemrus, Violet and Daisy May Jerema, Marlin Bushey, Jordan, Jackson Roy, Aaron and Alexa Riggs, Bodhi, Tyler, Gavin and Cecilia Lavon Patterson.
In honor of his life, services will be held Saturday, August the 19th ,2023 at 2:00 PM at the Clemmons Presbyterian Church, 3930 Clemmons Road, Clemmons NC 27012.
In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations to purchase “mechanical furry companion pets “. These delightful pets will be given to people in need and in nursing homes. His beloved “Puddy” brought Roy and the family countless moments of joy. Please go to https://gofund.me/b94653bf to make donations.
