Roy Thoene, 80, of Tyler, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 29th.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 6th at Flint Baptist Church at 10:00 am. A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 5th from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at Boren-Conner Funeral Home in Bullard, TX. A private interment will be at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery in Tyler, Texas.
Roy was born in Neiderwald, Texas, March 25,1944 to parents Alfred and Leonora Thoene. He attended school until the 9th grade, where he decided to drop out and help support his family by learning to be a butcher. He married his sweetheart, Barbara Jean, in 1965 after a whirlwind love that started just 6 months before. They enjoyed dates cutting up meat at Lovin's Meat Store. Roy started pastoring in January of 1972 and retired in 2023. Recently, he enjoyed being the weatherman and having coffee with his new friends at Garden Estates in Tyler. Roy made everyone feel like family and went to great lengths to be there for his congregation day or night. He was an avid jokester and loved making everyone smile. Roy's greatest passions were his meat house, pastoring, and his grandkids/great-grandkids.
He is survived by his daughter, Terri and husband, Larry Swinford of Tyler; daughter, Toni Portwood and wife, Julie Burks of Liberty Hill; son, Todd Thoene of Brownsboro; granddaughter, Erica and husband, Jeremy Hasley of Whitehouse; grandson, Nick and wife, Bayley Swinford of Edom; granddaughter, Taylor and husband, Harley Winters of Georgetown; great grandchildren: Will, Lawson, Pryce, Hudson, Alyson, Reagan, Emmett, Kennedy, Carter and Bear as well as brother, Albert Thoene; brother, Charles Thoene; brother, Clayton Thoene and numerous special nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Alfred Thoene; mother, Leonora Thoene; wife, Barbara Jean Thoene; brother, Robert Thoene; sister, Shirley Cox and brother, Raymond Thoene.

Terri, Toni, Todd...You know I loved your dad and before ever becoming friends with Toni in high school, or becoming his daughter-in-law, I knew of him from Trinity Baptist Church in Tyler. Everyone spoke highly of him. He was a great influence to many. I appreciate that over the last two years I was able to spend some time with him and am thankful for the Coca-cola phones he gave me and I treasure them. I KNOW he is very happy now to be with Jesus and am certain that your mother was there to greet him. His prayers have been answered. Hugs and prayers during this transitional time.

My dear friend Roy. There are too many wonderful memories to list. One thing people knew about Roy was his giving heart. He would give someone the shirt off his back. I remember giving him 2 Coca Cola cups and he was so excited he added them to his collection in the window. I miss our daily gossip sessions in the office. I miss your singing SHE´ll BE COMIN AROUND THE MOUNTAIN WHEN SHE COMES all day everyday hahaha Roy was definitely a light at Garden Estates and has made his mark in lots of peoples hearts. Heaven sure did gain a special angel.
