Roy Thompson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cremation Society of Kansas & Missouri - Prairie Village on Feb. 20, 2026.
Roy Ronald Thompson, 93, of Independence, Missouri, passed peacefully on January 17, 2026, from congestive heart failure. A devoted husband, father, brother, and faithful servant of Jesus Christ, Ron lived a life marked by kindness, hard work, and unwavering faith. Those who knew him will remember his warmth, his humor, and the joy he found in serving both his family and community.

Born on January 2, 1933, in Kansas City, Missouri, Ron was the son of hardworking parents who instilled in him a respect for honest labor and faithful living. A proud graduate of William Chrisman High School, Class of 1951, Ron began his professional journey at Sears & Roebuck the same year, working at the Truman and Cleveland location in Kansas City. When duty called, he answered by serving in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. His time in the service strengthened his discipline and deepened his commitment to hard work - traits that would define him throughout his life.

After returning home, Ron resumed his career at Sears, rising through the ranks as Traffic Supervisor and later as Buyer. His professional life took him and his family from Kansas City to Dallas, Texas (1978–1985), and finally to Chicago, Illinois (1985–1992). Each move was another chapter in a fulfilling a 39-year career built on integrity, reliability, and genuine connection with his friends and colleagues.

Ron married the love of his life, Beverly J. (Isaac) Thompson on September 8, 1957, with whom he shared countless cherished moments over 68 years. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, hospitality, and faith, raising two sons - Douglas A. Thompson and Kirk L. Thompson - of whom Ron was immensely proud.

Ron is survived by his wife Beverly J. Thompson of Independence MO, two sons Douglas A. Thompson and wife Belinda Thompson, Kirk L. Thompson, sister, Vickie (Marlatt) Hodges and husband Rick Hodges, nephew, Scott A. Lindsey and wife Kathy, grand-children: Kyle Thompson and wife Trisha Kennedy-Thompson, granddaughter Holly Thompson and Tylar Cauthon, Daniel Thompson, Kourtney Martin and husband Josh Martin, great-grandchildren – Declan Thompson, Weston Thompson, Mileena Kennedy and Harper Martin.

He was preceded in death by his mother Lena (Jones) Marlatt, father Roy Thompson, step-father Virgil Marlatt, and sister Lynna L Nelson.

A devout follower of Jesus Christ, Ron was an active and faithful member of the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Over the years, he was called to serve as a Priest, Elder, High Priest and Patriarch, roles he carried with humility, grace, and sincere devotion. His church family was central to his life, and he gave of his time and heart generously, uplifting all who crossed his path.

Known for his warm personality and welcoming spirit, Ron never met a stranger. His joy for life was reflected in his love for whistling - often mimicking bird calls with remarkable precision - and in his many adventures fishing and traveling, especially to Branson, Missouri. His passions were as wide-ranging as his generosity.

He had a love for gardening. Following his retirement, he poured his entrepreneurial spirit into selling fruit and tomatoes at the local farmers market, where his friendliness and humor made him a favorite among customers. His countless wins in promotional contests became a source of pride and lighthearted fun for all who knew him. He was a fearsome competitor at home in board games with friends and family; especially enjoying the games which made him laugh.

Ron was also active in community service, volunteering with Lunch Partners, where his cheerful disposition and compassion brightened many days.

A loving celebration of Ron's life will be held on February 28, 2026, at the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints – Zions Hill Congregation, 2820 M 291 Frontage Rd, Building A, Independence, Missouri. Visitation 10:00am – 10:45am; Service at 11:00am. Potluck Lunch to follow in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Lunch Partners, Clothes Closet of Remnant Church or the American Heart Association.

Ron's life was one lived in faith, family, and friendship - a radiant example of a heart devoted to God and to others. His legacy will continue to shine through all the lives he touched.
