Roy Herbert Wanlass was born on September 21, 1940, in
Lehi, Utah. He passed away peacefully at his home on January 5th, in St. George, Utah, with his wife and son by his side. He left behind a legacy of love, dedication, and resilience. Roy was the second of nine children born to Elmo J. Wanlass and Doris Nellie Turner. Roy's early years were spent in humble surroundings and, at times, challenging circumstances.
At 17, Roy enlisted in the Navy, where he served on a destroyer. At one point, he served alongside his brothers Jay and Dick, marking the first time three brothers served on the same ship. His professional life was primarily dedicated to the Utah Air National Guard, where he worked as an aircraft mechanic on KC 135 air refueling tankers. Roy's passion for aviation extended beyond his career; he was a private pilot and owned a Cessna 172, which he loved to fly around Utah.
Outside of his service in the Air National Guard, Roy drove trucks for various companies, including his brother-in-law's Peck Trucking. Late in life, he started bus driving in Maui where he lived for 5 years, and St. George, where he retired due to the physical challenges he began facing. He loved driving the bus and was beloved by all the kids and their parents. Roy's life was marked by hard work, and he often heldtwo to three jobs at a time.
In 1973, Roy married his sweetheart, Joan Faye Hall, and they shared nearly 52 wonderful years, having their marriage sealed in the Jordan River Temple. Roy was a devoted husband who adored his "babe" Joan, always expressing his love and admiration for her. While their life wasn't easy, they were great examples to all of a loving and caring relationship, something to strive for and emulate.
Roy was a loving father to three children: Travis Lehmberg, who tragically passed away in 1980, Yvette Wanlass Gunter of Highland, and Christian Wanlass (Tom Wells) of New York City. He was also a proud grandfather to six amazing grandchildren-Sydnee (Morgan) Hutchings, Sadee Gunter, Sophee (Brandon) Bowen, Travis "TJ" Gunter, Jackson Wells-Wanlass, and Carter Wells-Wanlass-and four great-grandchildren.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Jay (Eloise) Wanlass, Richard "Dick" Wanlass, Larry (Lynn) Wanlass, Shirley Bloomfield, and Lisa (Bill) Beveridge. He is survived by his siblings Lorraine (Tex) Chatwin, Johnny (Debbie) Wanlass, and Bruce (Brenda) Wanlass.
Roy was among the kindest, softest, and most thoughtful people. Though he didn't have much, he always wanted to do what he could to help others, whether it be friends and family or donating to organizations that pull on your heartstrings on TV. His smile would light up a room, and he had the most memorable one-liners. He overcame many adversities with grace and strength. His love and affection for others were always evident, and everyone who knew him knew how he felt above them. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A viewing will be held at Wing Mortuary on Friday, January 17th from 6:00pm-8:00pm along with a service on Saturday, January 18th from 9:30am to 10:30am, followed by Graveside Services at Lehi Cemetery at 11:00 am.
