Roy Williamson Obituary

Roy Carter Williamson Jr., 90, of Midland Texas, left this life on earth for his eternal home, in Heaven on June 6th, 2023. He was at home, surrounded by his loving family. Roy was born in Waco, Texas on December 6, 1932 to the late Roy Carter Williamson, Sr. and Nina Sue Gill Williamson. He grew up in El Dorado, Arkansas and Shreveport, Louisiana where he graduated from St. John's Academy. Roy attended Baylor University for two years before transferring to the University of Oklahoma where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geological Engineering. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi, Pi Epsilon Tau, Sigma Tau, Sigma Gamma Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi. After graduating from OU, Roy married the love of his life, Karen Stewart on July 12, 1956, in Oklahoma City. The newly married couple moved to Dayton, Ohio where Roy served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) from 1956-1958. After this service, Roy was first employed by Gulf Oil Corporation in Odessa, Texas where he was responsible for field engineering projects and oil and gas reserve evaluations. In 1967, he moved to Midland, Texas to join the consulting firm of Leibrock, Landreth, Campbell and Callaway. By 1984, the firm evolved into Williamson Petroleum Consultants, Inc. (WPC) with Roy as the President and CEO. WPC had offices in Midland, Houston, Denver and Nashville offering the oil and gas industry a completely integrated engineering and management consulting service. Williamson Petroleum Consultants was one of the top six petroleum consulting firms in the United States and has evaluated oil and gas fields in all states that have proved reserves. In addition to the overall management of the company, Roy presented expert witness testimony for litigation regarding all matters involving oil and gas reserve, economic projections and operations. Roy also was the Chairman and CEO of two companies: WG Energy, Ltd. and Diamondback Resources LLC. Roy was Engineer of the Year of the Permian Basin Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers; a Registered Professional Engineer in the States of Colorado and Texas; a past Director and past Regional Advisory Board of the Independent Petroleum Association of America; a past Director and past Association Advisor of Permian Basin Petroleum Association; a member of the Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists; past Chairman for the Permian Basin Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers; past Chairman of the Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers; a member of the Society of Professional Well Log Analysts and West Texas Geological Society. Roy was active in the community with one of his most treasured accomplishments being the past Director of the Petroleum Museum and playing an instrumental role in the development of the wing to display Jim Hall's famed Chaparral Cars. Other community service included being past President and past Director of the Metropolitan YMCA and capital campaign co-chair of the fundraiser in 2006 that raised $7 million to expand and renovate its downtown facility. Additionally, he was a past Director of the Southwest Oilman's Tennis Tournament; past Director of the Midland Ballet; past Director of the Midland Country Club; past Director of the Midland Symphony; past Director of the Racquet Club; past Director of Trinity School; and past chairman of America's Walk for Diabetes. Roy loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of First Baptist Church of Midland. He enjoyed race car driving, western shooting, tennis, golf, snow skiing, and OU football, among other pursuits. Roy is survived by his loving wife, Karen Williamson; two daughters, Jana Williamson Smith and her husband, Stephen Smith of Dallas, Texas; Amy Williamson Martinez and her husband, Scott Martinez of Dallas, Texas. Roy and Karen have four grandchildren: Michael Smith and his wife Mia Smith, Alyssa Smith, Wesley Martinez and William Martinez. The family would like to express their gratitude towards Lou Mays, Patricia Johnson, Alice Saenz, Angie Hernandez and Marisol Perales as well as Home Hospice for their care and support. A celebration of Roy's life will be held Saturday, June 10th at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of First Baptist of Midland, 2104 W. Louisiana Avenue, Midland, TX 79701. A reception will follow in the Welcome Center. The service will be preceded by a visitation on Friday, June 9th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at The Branch, Nalley-Pickle and Welch Funeral Home, 3800 N. Big Spring Street, Midland, TX 79705. Memorial donations may be sent in Roy's name to First Baptist of Midland, 2104 W. Louisiana Avenue, Midland, TX 79701, the Petroleum Museum of Midland, 1500 Interstate 20 West, Midland, TX 79701 and The Life Center, 2101 W. Wall Street, Midland, TX 79701.
