Ruben Gustave Elder, affectionately known as Gus, 58, lost his courageous fight to cancer on December 8, 2025, in Gulfport, MS.
A loving husband, Gus is survived by his wife, Melissa Elder. He is also survived by his siblings, Kevin Elder (Ashley), Amy Elder, and Jason Elder (Shannon). Gus was a father of five children, Jessica Elder (Blake), Desirae Cole (James), Malaurie Graham, Andrew Elder (Chelsea), and John Tyler Reynolds (Lynnae). He was a devoted PawPaw/ Papa Gus to Caleb Graham, Madysen Graham, Alaiah Rodgers, Kylie Liddell, Grallin Box, Brayden Gerald, Avan Elder, Cam Meterjean, Ashton Gerald, Brayston Gerald, Kelsie Liddell, Amelia Elder, Iziah Cole, Nala Gerald, Remi Gerald, Cam Cam, Audri, and Autumn. He has one great grandson, Zayden. He will be missed by his nieces, Shelbie, Alexa, Breanna, Hannah and Elexis; as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
Gus was preceded in death by his father, Ruben Leonard Elder; and his mother, Judith Carol Elder.
Born in Lucedale, MS, Gus’s family later moved to Virginia. There, he graduated from George C. Marshall High School in Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA in 1985. He loved starting his day with a hot cup of coffee. As an avid sports fan, Gus supported the New Orleans Saints unwaveringly, playing his online games and putting sports bets in. He found his peace and relaxation in the nature with fishing and camping, he was known for camping with style. Above all, he cherished moments spent with his loved ones and friends. Gus will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His legacy of love, laughter, and family ties will forever be remembered.
A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home. Friends are invited to visit one hour prior.
