Ruben Norte Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Perches Funeral Home-East - El Paso on Nov. 14, 2025.
Ruben Norte
June 12,1945 - November 8,2025

Ruben Norte, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025. He suffered a massive stroke and despite all efforts, he did not recover. He was surrounded by his family. Born on June 12, 1945, Ruben lived a life rich in creativity, dedication, and love.

Ruben-received his early education at St. Joseph's Catholic School, attending from kindergarten through 8th grade. He then entered Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Santa Fe, New Mexico, before later transferring to Jesuit High School, where he graduated in 1963 on a football scholarship. After returning from military service, he completed his college education at the University of Texas at El Paso, earning his Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communications in 1970.

In 1967, during what would have been his final year of college, Ruben was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He served honorably for two years, spending part of that time in Germany, where he wrote for the Army newspaper. Though eager to finish his degree, he remained deeply proud of having served his country and often spoke of that time with gratitude.

Ruben began his career with the Los Angeles CBS station (KNXT) as a copy boy, determined to prove his abilities as a writer. His talent quickly became evident, and he rose to become one of their news writers. He later accepted a position as a special project's producer at KNBC, where he earned his first News Emmy and Golden Mike for "The Privacy Invasion," followed by a second Emmy for "The Latinization of Los Angeles."

He went on to join Unit 4, an investigative news team, and later produced award-winning documentary work, including a Cable ACE National Award for his series on Biography. Following this, he also worked on Dateline, further expanding his impact in investigative and documentary storytelling. His executive producer later recommended him for a new show called Entertainment Tonight, where he began as an Associate Director and soon became one of the program's directors. His work opened doors to countless projects, allowing him to meet and interview many of the world's most famous celebrities. Much later, he joined close friends at the Weller/Grossman production company, creating some of his finest documentary work, including projects for the History Channel and Biography. He also produced for On the Scene Productions, contributing to national programming with his signature care and storytelling depth.

Ruben's greatest story, however, began at 18 years of age when he met Zita. From the moment they saw each other, it was love at first sight. Their bond grew into a lifelong partnership defined by devotion, respect, laughter, and unwavering commitment. Together, they were blessed with 58 years of marriage and two beautiful children and one grandchild. Their marriage was the heart of Ruben's life, and he cherished every year they shared.

Beyond his professional achievements, Ruben was a man of curiosity, warmth, and quiet brilliance. He had a lifelong love of photography-his favorite subject being his grandson, Remy. He cherished traveling, discovering new places with gratitude and wonder. Above all, Ruben loved his family deeply and unconditionally. His gentle humor, generous spirit, and steady presence made him the heart of every room. He believed in the power of stories, truth, and human connection.

Ruben was preceded in death by his parents, Raul and Guadalupe Norte, and his brothers, Robert and Rick Norte.

He is survived by his wife, Zita; their son, Ruben Andre Norte; their daughter, Zita Bovee; their son-in-law, Kyle Bovee; and his beloved grandson, Remy. He is also survived by his sister, Terri Norte LaVelle, and her husband, Paul LaVelle; his brother, Rudy Norte, and his wife, Tracey Norte; and his Naudin siblings, who were brothers and sisters to him in every way.

Services for Ruben will be held after the holidays. A Mass will be celebrated, followed by burial at Fort Bliss National Cemetery and a celebration of his life

With heavy hearts, we remember my Uncle Ruben, one of my favorite people and a true example of what it means to be a loving husband and a great father. His marriage to my Aunt Zita was one of the most beautiful and loving unions I have ever witnessed. It was rooted in love and a deep devotion to family.

Uncle Ruben and Aunt Zita welcomed me into their home when I was in high school while I worked one summer at Suzette´s Bakery at Magic Mountain. Uncle Ruben would regularly pick me up after work, always making sure I was cared for. Later, when Minerva, Natalia, and I moved to California, they again embraced us with open arms. We were blessed to even rent their condo for a time while living in Valencia, California. Great memories!

Uncle Ruben was always loving, generous, and present, not just to me but to my entire family. His kindness left a lasting mark on my life, and I will miss him dearly.

May he rest in eternal peace.

I have known Ruben since grade school at St Joseph´s. We parted ways after grade school, going to different high schools and having different careers but circumstances via mutual friends allowed us to reconnect prior to Ruben and Zita return to El Paso. Ruben then became one of our coffee buddies, shown in the pic below. Those in the pic are also grade school friends. Rubens sense of humor was unmatched and we all enjoyed his stories. Condolences to Zita and family. I´m sure his humor has continued in heaven. God Bless.

My Uncle Ruben was my first intro to someone cool. Someone bigger than life. He worked with stars and he had Emmy awards on his shelf. He was incredibly talented and also one of the nicest people I have ever known. He will be missed. He was an amazing husband, father and grand father. He was also my Godfather. I pray that you rest in peace. Love your nephew and Godson, Michael

Uncle Ruben is someone that I will always remember with much love and appreciation. As a little girl, I remember spending weeks of my summer in California with Uncle Ruben, Aunt Zita and my cousins. We went to Magic Mountain many times, spent ours in the pool and he even took us to meet the cast of Stand by Me, which I was too shy and too dorky to go up to them; but it was a highlight in my life for sure.

Throughout my life, he always made it a point to be present at most meaningful events in our life. He sat in the background, took candid pictures of all of us, then the next day we would get a beautiful surprise of the moments he had captured without any of us even knowing it.

Uncle Ruben was funny, silly and witty. He was humble and kind. Heaven may have gained another angel, but our family lost a great one.

With Much Love,

Ruben will always have a special place in my heart. He was so kind, thoughtful and funny in a quiet way. Since we lived in different states for most of our adult lives, we didn´t see each other often. When Zita decided to retire and move to El Paso, it was so special to have them close.
We became travel buddies and lived close enough to see each other often,
have game nights and share dinners and holidays together. We loved going to the movies together.
Ruben and Bob became close friends. They were both quiet listeners and almost seemed to have their own language. They understood each other´s unique sense of humor.
There are no words to express the sadness of losing Ruben especially since it was so unexpected. He will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.

Can´t shake the sadness of learning that Ruben Norte has passed. Hard to imagine that it´s been almost a half-century since we were colleagues at KNBC, including glory days at Unit 4, where we were both field producers, with the legendary duo of Warren Olney and Pete Noyes. I admired Ruben´s talent and humility, his calm temperament and wry sense of humor. And I´ll never forget how supportive he was to his female colleagues at a time when that was uncommon. Reconnecting through Facebook & comparing notes on Texas, gardening and grandparenting has been a joy for many years. He and his extraordinary wife, Zita Naudin Norte, had one of those relationships now called "couple goals," married nearly 60 years, and I can´t imagine the depth of her sense of loss. RIP, Ruben. (That´s him on the far right next to Pete, me in front, just behind Warren. We were serious but knew how to have fun, too, and created a lot of memories and good journalism.) - From a Facebook post, with love for Ruben and his family, Charlotte Perry Aguilar

Uncle Ruben a few picture that capture you
I was always in Awe of my Celebrity Uncle
Thank you for the special events I still cannot believe
I saw Sonny and Cher, Bobby Darin and he sang Mack the Knife. When you were going to Liza Gibbons wedding I was like Wow I appreciated when you went to my track meets and then you were at Natalees sports events.
Thank you for always being present and capturing the best pictures

Heavenly Father,
We come to you with heavy hearts, mourning the loss of our dear uncle. We thank you for his life and the time we were blessed to share with him-for the cherished memories, the laughter, and the love he brought into our lives.
Lord, we know that he is now with You, free from the pain and suffering of this world. We find peace in Your promise of eternal life for those who believe in You. We humbly ask that You grant his soul eternal rest and let Your perpetual light shine upon him. May he find perfect peace in Your loving arms in the garden of paradise.
We also pray for ourselves and all the family and friends he has left behind. Comfort us in our sadness and turn our sorrow into the joy of knowing we will see him again in Your kingdom. Give us the strength and courage to navigate this difficult time and to support one another in our grief. Help us to honor his memory by living lives that reflect Your love and grace.
We ask this in Jesus' name.
Amen.

My uncle Ruben was such an inspiring artist, creative , dad, uncle, friend , grandfather, brother.
So exceptionally kind, sweet , funny and cool.
The most beautiful thing was his great love affair with my dear Aunt Zita. For the ages.
I treasure the time I got to spend in your home back in Valencia, SC! Thank you for your hospitality.
Uncle Ruben gave me my first actual CD. And it was Madonna. He was a fan. And fun fact he directed me in a jeans commercial. I never saw the Final Cut but what a fun experience to actually work with him.
You are missed and I expect you are with our soul circle on this extraordinary journey. So much love. Xo
