Ruben Silence Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Shaffer Funeral Home - Sherwood on Feb. 13, 2026.
Mr. Ruben Ervin Silence, known affectionately as Ervin to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2026, at the age of 93, in San Angelo, Texas. Born on December 21, 1932, in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Ervin's journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for his family and community.

Ervin's early years were spent in Jacksonville, where he attended Jacksonville High School before answering the nation's call to serve in the United States Air Force. There, he honed his skills as a jet engine mechanic, a trade that would define much of his career. Ervin's commitment to excellence and education continued as he later ventured into the fields of training and administration, which further showcased his analytical mind and generous spirit.

Upon retiring from the Air Force, Ervin's work ethic led him to the Public Works Department of the City of San Angelo, where he continued to contribute to the well-being of his community. His expertise and dedication were evident in every task he undertook, earning him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.

Ervin's Christian faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and his purpose. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where he served as an usher, generously giving his time and energy to ensure the smooth running of services and church events.

Even after retiring from his professional career, Ervin never ceased to engage with the world around him. He studied real estate, not for personal gain, but to expand his knowledge. However, his true passion lay in volunteerism. He was a proud member of the Chefs unit at the Shriners organization, a reflection of his desire to bring joy and support to those in need. His volunteer work extended to the pharmacy at the air base and various other organizations, where his handy skills and analytical approach were of great benefit.

Ervin's love for his family was boundless. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Veronica Terrell Silence, and his sons, Anthony John Hyman and Andrew Ervin Silence; his sister, Shirley Silence Aikens; and his brother, Jimmy Silence. His legacy continues through his daughter, Linda A. Luraschi, daughter-in-law Virginia S. Silence, brothers Troy Silence (Shelby), Kenneth Silence (Marie), and Gary Silence, as well as through the cherished memories held by his numerous nieces and nephews.

Ervin's interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. He was an automobile enthusiast, a gardener who delighted in the challenge of cultivating roses and other flowers, and a Yorkie lover, with his companions Misty and then Katie bringing him much joy. His garden was a haven for hummingbirds, and he took great pleasure in watching them flock to his feeder.

Described by those who knew him as handy, generous, and analytical, Ervin's life was one of unwavering commitment to his faith, his family, and his country. He will be deeply missed, yet his influence will continue to be felt by all who were blessed to know him. Mr. Ruben Ervin Silence's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, service, and dedication. His memory will be treasured and kept alive in the hearts of his loved ones and by all who were touched by his kindness and grace.

Ervin was one of my "first cousins" and this obituary tells me he lived a good life, was loved and respected by many. I have not seen Ervin since I was about 5 years old (ok I'm 82) but I have heard from him on FB and I'm sure he will be greatly missed by his children and other family members. I wish I could have known him better in later years.
