Ruby Faye Helmer Marrs Adamson, 87, of Fairfield, Texas, passed away Tuesday April 7, 2026, with family by her side. She was born on September 10, 1938, in
Houston, Texas to Maudie Connolly and Samuel Helmer.
In 1955, Ruby married James Devere "Donny" Marrs of Pert Community in Anderson County. Soon after, she joined him in Germany, where he was stationed with the United States Army. After his discharge, the couple returned to Houston, where Donny worked for the Houston Fire Department until his death in 1961.
She remained a single mother for 9 years until 1970 when she married John Selden "Johnny" Adamson of
Houston, Texas.
In her earlier years she worked in an office and as a retail store manager but she ultimately retired from her long time job as a bank teller.
She loved traveling, annual family trips to the Frio River, baking, caring for her family, deer hunting with her husband, and spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandson.
Except for her time in Germany, Ruby lived in Texas her entire life, with most of her years spent in Houston, Magnolia, and Fairfield.
Ruby was a loving, caring woman. She made sure everyone had plenty of food and was an excellent cook. She was known for her strong morals, strong faith in God, and her independent spirit. More than anything, she cherished her immediate family and her lifelong sister-friend, Joan Gabler Hutchins.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Lewis and husband Thomas; grandson, Christopher Lewis and his wife Kelsie; grandson, Adam Lewis; granddaughter, Jenica Lewis; great-grandson, Zachary Lewis and his wife Megan. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Violet Helmer, Bobbye Followill, Connie Buckner, Gloria Jones, Kathy Whitener-Evans and her husband Forest, and Patsy Teague and her husband Tommy; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Donny" Marrs; her parents, Samuel and Maudie Helmer; sister, Mildred Dworsky, brother-in-law, Jay Dworsky; brother, Charles Helmer; and her husband of 26 years, Johnny Adamson.
Serving as pallbearers will be David Dworsky, Steve Dworsky, Fred Rangel, Christopher Lewis, Adam Lewis, and Zachary Lewis.
Ruby will be remembered for her love, her faith, her strength, and the care she gave so freely to those around her. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM. to 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home, 3434 TX-256 Loop,
Palestine, Texas 75801. A graveside service will follow at Neches Cemetery in Neches, Texas, with Pastor Forest Evans officiating.
