A dedicated member of Young's Chapel Baptist Church, Deaconess Ruby Dean Goodwin played a significant role in numerous ministries, including the Deaconess Ministry, the Missionary Society, Kitchen Ministry, and the Usher Ministry. As a foundational member of the church, she was key in establishing the Young Women's Auxiliary (YWA) and served as its first advisor. Known for her commitment to service, she was honored to be named the Mother of the Church.
Affectionately called "Mrs. Ruby, Ma Ruby, or Aunt Ruby" by her family and friends, she retired from The Greenwood Methodist Home (now Wesley Commons), where she worked as a seamstress in the Housekeeping Department. Her servant heart led her to continue her work with the GRAD program, caring for their babies, helping teen mothers earn their high school diplomas. Ruby was also renowned for her culinary skills, particularly her red velvet cakes, delicious pies, and fried corn. Her home was a welcoming space for many, always filled with snacks and warmth.
