Thomas Falvey Obituary

(News story) Thomas Murray Falvey, a longtime athlete and fitness enthusiast died on Oct. 12.

Robin Falvey-Ayers, his niece, said he died in his sleep.

Mrs. Falvey-Ayers described her uncle as a man of the people.

"He had an overall general concern for others. He was thoughtful and overall a kind and great man," she said.

Mr. Falvey left his impact on Toledo's athletic and fitness culture as he was a former boxing referee and marathon runner. Mr. Falvey began running in 1977 and qualified for the Boston Marathon the next year. He completed a total of 68 marathons including races in Chicago, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles.

Mr. Falvey's best time was three hours and 15 minutes - his best time in a 10k race was 39:50.

Mrs. Falvey-Ayers said her uncle was running until his final days.

"His running days which never really ended. He would secretly run on the treadmills still. I've had people from Planet Fitness text me their condolences and say 'I saw him working out regularly at the gym.' He was working out until the end," she said.

Mr. Falvey founded the annual 24-hour Ultra Marathon held at Olander Park in Sylvania, in which he was the race director for the event for 17 years. Mr. Falvey was also a member of the Toledo Roadrunners Club for more than 40 years and held numerous leadership positions.

Mr. Falvey started boxing at the Police Athletic League as an amateur. His first victory came against a classmate at DeVilbiss High School. He continued his career until he turned 22.

He later began judging and refereeing. He refereed for Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, the Spinks brothers, Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Thomas Hearns.

"He was an avid boxer and loved the sport. He was great at keeping contact with former boxers," Mrs. Falvey-Ayers said.

Mr. Falvey met his wife Alice while he was teaching in the Detroit Public School system.

The couple was married for 55 years.

Mrs. Falvey-Ayers said her uncle described his wife as his "best pal".

"He would often say 'she is the best thing that ever happened to me,'" she said.

The couple had three children Anne, Christopher, and Mary, all of whom preceded him in death as a result of Cystic Fibrosis. Mr. Falvey served as president of the Cystic Fibrosis Chapter of Northwest Ohio in the 1970s.

He was born on Dec. 6, 1936, to Eleanor and James P. Falvey. He was preceded in death by his parents and a younger brother.

Surviving are his wife, Alice, and his brother, James Murray Falvey.

A service will be held at a later date to be announced. Arrangements are being handled by Walker Funeral Home.

The family suggests tributes to the Knock Out Parkinson Disease on 5965 Telegraph Rd., Toledo, OH 43612 or the Toledo Roadrunners Club at P.O. Box 8818, Maumee, OH 43537.

As noted in my 2020 comments, Tom and I were running buddies along with many other Toledo area runners. He was always the enthusiast and encouraging to all levels of competitors. Tom turned the Olander Park 24 Hour Ultra-marathon into a national and international successful event. As soon as his tenure as Race Director ended, the event went into decline and cancelled this year after moving from Olander. As previously suggested, Tom Falvey deserves a statue next to his long-time friend Sy Mah in Olander Park for his many contributions to running and community in Toledo.

I just now heard this sad news of Tom’s passing. He was a true forever friend of my late husband Nick. Many good times here in Florida & on trips with he & Alice. I have his last note on my fridge now. He was a great comfort to me when Nick passed. I hope he, Hal & Nick talking boxing right now. My deepest sympathy to all family members.

My Gosh, the stories Tom could tell! A boxer in the Golden Gloves while a student at DeVilbiss HS, and a track & field athlete while at the U. of Detriot----Tom dedicated his life to service in the community. His full time job was as a teacher at Rogers HS where my wife Beverly taught with him for over 20 years. He was always supportive and greatly respected by the students and staff.

We enjoyed going to the Annual Toledo Chili Dinner downtown. I would drive to Tom's house, pick him up, and Tom became my navigator-----we were usually late to the dinner, and late getting home.

Then there was the time Tom came with me to Whitmer HS to give a talk on Boxing----he brought his red, white & blue boxing gloves. Tom proceeded to tell the students of the many famous boxers he knew, and his experiences with some of them (Tom's Sonny Liston story was a Show Stopper). To conclude the program, we gave a brief demonstration with those R.W. & B. gloves. Rest in Peace Good Man! Bless you Alice - Ron Martin

We were honoured to know this kind man. He was so friendly and inspirational, always making us feel like special friends when we would see him on our annual trip to Toledo for the Glass City Marathon. We enjoyed spending time with him, going out for dinner or sharing Alice's cookies. He was so supportive, greeting Rick at the end of the race with sincere congratulations.
We will miss him.

I used to babysit for the Falvey children. They were my favorite family to babysit for because the kids were very sweet and Mr. and Mrs. Falvey were so kind. A truly wonderful family. RIP Mr. Falvey.

Tom & I were introduced by fellow marathon cheerleader, Sy Mah, in 1982. When Sy passed away unexpectedly in 1988, Tom stepped forward to help and console Sy's daughters, and so many running "buddies" who came to Toledo to honor Sy. Like Sy, Tom deserves a statue at Olander Park honoring his many contributions to running in Toledo, and the National Championship 24 Hour Ultra-marathon at Olander Park (1989-2020). His enthusiasm for his running buddies, and his devotion to his family were special, and greatly appreciated and recalled by so many of us who were fortunate to know Tom and Alice over so many years.

I went to school with Tom from the third grade through high school at Devilbiss. I remember Tom recruiting me to ring the bell at the Golden gloves matches. I was surprised at the article in the Blade about Tom being such a runner of marathons. I was proud to know him. Tom was always a good guy.

I don’t think Tom ever knew my name. We said hello at races. Everyone liked Tom.

Tom befriended my daughter Melissa when she was at Lakes of Sylvania. Gave her one of his trophies and sent her postcards. He sent us a very thoughtful letter this year when he learned that Melissa’s dad had died suddenly. He always brightened her day.
