Ruby Reeves Obituary

Published by Navarre Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Nov. 9, 2009.
A bright light has gone out in this world, but shines even more brightly now in Heaven. Ruby Dry Reeves passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 9, 2009. Ruby was born in Baytown, Texas on June 3, 1928 to Perry and Lou Eva Dry. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and worked at Humble Oil & Refining for a short time before meeting the love of her life, W. C. Reeves. They married on November 10, 1950 and began a lifelong love story. Now they will celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary together in Heaven. Ruby began a 30 year career as a legal secretary at Reid, Strickland, Gillette & Ramsey Law Firm in 1958. She worked for Joe Reid until his death, and then for Robert Gillette until her retirement in 1988. Nothing was more important to Ruby than her family, whom she loved above all else. She and W. C. were blessed with a son, Gary, and a daughter, Connie, as well as many good friends and business associates. She spent countless hours making ballet and tap costumes for her daughter's dance recitals year after year, listening to Gary's band practicing and going to his Optimist Club Pee Wee Football games, attending Optimist Club functions with W. C. who served two terms as president of the Baytown Evening Optimist Club, working crossword puzzles, playing Wheel of Fortune, taking Gary and Connie and their friends on glorious trips to Garner State Park every summer, traveling to all fifty states with their travel club, the San Jac Wheelers, and loving her life. She and W. C. enjoyed their retirement at their ranch in Richards, Texas and loved having their family there for holiday dinners, family reunions, and all days in between. Ruby and Connie spent many hours sitting on the front porch at the ranch in the early mornings, drinking coffee, enjoying the beauty of the rolling hills and cattle grazing, and solving the problems of the world. Ruby's treasured time with her grandsons at the ranch was a particular source of fulfillment for her and W. C. Ruby was so proud of Gary and was thrilled when he and his wife, Jacqueline, made her a grandmother when Gary was 40! Her grandson, Zachary, was the light of her life and is now a freshman at the University of Texas. Her three older grandsons, Forester, Corbin and Cameron became members of the family when Connie married Clayton Cooke in 1973 and made Ruby and W. C. instant grandparents, a role they loved. She never met a stranger and was loved by everyone who knew her. Her door was always open when someone needed help, a hug, or a shoulder to cry on. Her sweet smile brightened everyone's day and she will be terribly missed. Ruby was predeceased by her parents, her husband W. C., her sister Pearl Derryberry, and her brother-in-law Dr. Kenneth W. Ford. She is survived by her sister Opal Ford, son Gary Reeves and wife Jacqueline, grandson Zachary Reeves, daughter Connie Cooke and husband Clayton, grandsons Forester, Corbin and Cameron Cooke, niece Sherri Hanson and husband Mike, great nieces Brandi and Skylar Hanson, great nephew Brandon Hanson and wife Michelle, and numerous other family members and friends. She is also survived by her beloved Chihuahua, Coco. Ruby's family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Memory Gardens with Rev. Mike Proctor officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Houston Humane Society, P. O. Box 450528, Houston, TX 77245 The family would like to extend a special thank you to Amy Smith, Julia Morton and the entire staff of Remington Park Assisted Living, and to Faith Community Hospice for their loving care of Ruby during the last month of her extraordinary life. Arrangements are under the direction of Navarre Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 2444 Rollingbrook Drive, Baytown, Texas, 77521 (281) 422-8111.
