Ruby Thomas Scurlock Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sanderson Funeral Homes, Inc. - Carthage on Jun. 7, 2025.
The earthly journey for Mrs. Ruby Jean Thomas Scurlock ended at 12:49 a.m. Saturday morning June 7, 2025 with her family at her bedside at her Jackson Avenue home. The 81-year-old homemaker began her heavenly journey and was pronounced deceased at 1:38 a.m. by Gentiva Hospice of Livingston, who had been lovingly assisting the family with her care in her final days.
Eld. Rickey Hall will officiate at the 11 a.m. Tuesday morning June 10th funeral service from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow beside her husband in the Garden of Everlasting Life at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
The Scurlock family will receive friends on Monday June 9th from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again on Tuesday beginning at 9 a.m.
Born Ruby Jean Thomas in the Carver Hollow in the Cartwright Community, she was the only child of the late Carl Bell Thomas who died January 9, 1994 at the age of 74 and Vera Toe Toe Knight Thomas who died August 19, 2003 at the age of 77.
Mrs. Scurlock was a member of the 1962 graduating class at Smith County High School and there she majored in science and business education. As a member of the Future Homemakers of America, she served as a class officer her freshman and sophomore year, also those two years she served as a football queen attendant, her sophomore year was the class secretary-treasurer and her senior year was a member of the office staff.
Ruby Jean always had a zest for life, enjoyed having fun in a respectful way and the statement made of her in the '62 "Owl" annual was: "What a time! What a civilization."
At the farm of the late Eld. Phocian Gibbs on May 9, 1962, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, South Carthage native, Jimmy Ray Scurlock, who preceded her in death at the age of 66 on January 1, 2009 following almost forty-seven years of marriage.
Mrs. Scurlock retired in 2003 from Dura Manufacturing Corporation in Gordonsville.
Perhaps the most important event in her life was being saved on February 15, 2009, just after her 65th birthday on February 2nd. She was saved at the Coopers Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in the Dismal Community of Dekalb County.
Surviving are her two sons, Eld. Rickey Scurlock and wife Tracy of the Hickman Community, Todd Scurlock and wife Angela Bane Scurlock of South Carthage, three grandchildren, Elisabeth Leann Mason of South Carthage.
