Rufus D. Burleson Jr.

Rufus D. Burleson, Jr. was born on July 20, 1951, to the late Rufus D. Burleson, Sr. and Jerline Rhodes Burleson in Hearn, Texas. He was the third of 13 children. Growing up, Rufus was a gifted athlete, excelling as a track and field star at Booker T. Washington High School. After graduation, he served his country by joining the U.S. Army, where he had a distinguished and honorable military career. While stationed at Ft. Lewis, fate brought him together with the love of his life, Debra, and they married on October 7, 1983 who remained a loyal and devoted wife until the end. Soon after, the couple relocated to Honolulu, HI, where Rufus was stationed at Schofield Barracks. They enjoyed their time in Hawaii until Rufus retired from military service, marking the end of his dedicated Army career.

After retiring from the Army in 1986, Rufus and Debra returned to Washington State to be close to family. Rufus soon began his career as a CNA at Park Rose Care Center in Tacoma, where his compassion and dedication shone through. He later transitioned to become the Director of Custodial Services at Allenmore Condominiums, where he worked for over 30 years, earning the respect and admiration of all who knew him. His commitment to excellence and care for those around him was evident in every role he took on.

Rufus had a deep love for the Lord and was a devoted member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He proudly sang in the Men's Chorus and offered his time whenever help was needed. Family was at the heart of everything he did, and he never missed an opportunity to express his love and pride for his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. His words of encouragement were a constant, with nearly every conversation ending in, "I love you and I am sooo proud of you," a phrase that became his signature reminder of how much they meant to him. He shared a special bond with his siblings, who all looked up to him with admiration. One of their favorite memories is of Rufus playfully lining them up for a treat, taking them to the ice cream truck, letting them order whatever they wanted, only to turn and say with a grin, "I left my wallet in the house." It became a beloved family joke, one he got them with every time, reminding them of his humor and the joy he brought to their lives.

Rufus was a culinary master, especially when it came to holiday feasts. His family eagerly looked forward to his legendary dressing and gravy. No matter how full they were, they always made room for his famous sweet potato and pumpkin pies. His passion for "old school" R&B music was undeniable-at any moment, you could find Rufus joyfully singing at the top of his lungs or dancing with infectious energy. A devoted sports fan, he loved watching basketball and football. Rufus, known for his impeccable style, he had a keen eye for fashion and always took pride in looking sharp, with his love for stylish clothes and shoes reflecting his vibrant personality.

Rufus is preceded in death by his cherished parents, Rufus D. Burleson, Sr. and Jerline Rhodes Burleson. Sisters: Doris Jean Williams and Jerrol Annette Jones. Brothers: Larry D. Burleson and Alonzo Burleson. He leaves to cherish his life and memory his devoted wife of 41 years, Debra Burleson. Daughters: Marlo Goodwill, Stacey Burleson (Charlie) Markley, and Jenifer Burleson (Jon) Theel. Sisters: Ruby Rhodes Thomas, Ruby Jewel (Joe) Carper, Kathelene (Herman) Mangum, Pamela Renee (Michael) Conner, Tammy (Michael) Bell, and Monique Lachaun (Patrick) Fill. Brothers: Johnny Ray (Rachel) Burleson, Gregory Wayne (Angie) Burleson, and Arthur L. (Norma) Burleson. Grandchildren: Kaili (Ryan) Griffin, Blaise Markley, Olivia Markley, Ashlynn (Wriyan "Ray") Parks, Hunter Morris, Grayson Morris, and Brian Theel. Great-grandson, Amir Parks; and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
