Rufus Miller Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by MeadowLawn Funeral Home, Crematory and Cemetery on Feb. 14, 2026.
Rufus Miller Jr., born April 22 , 1948 to Rufus Miller Sr. and Martha Jane Owens-Miller in San Antonio, Texas. Rufus experienced his childhood in his beloved Westside neighborhood, beginning his primary education at St. Catherine's Catholic School . A proud graduate of Brackenridge High School, he began building a legacy of determination and excellence at a young age. His athletic gifts led him to play in the South Texas Negro League, where he earned respect not only for his talent but for his character. He later traveled with the Harlem Stars basketball team, sharing his love of the game and forming friendships and memories that would last a lifetime. Every summer without fail he would return to San Antonio to play baseball. Baseball was always close to his heart. The diamond was his second home and he continued playing the game he loved until 2017. A remarkable testament to his endurance, passion, and youthful spirit.

Rufus was introduced to Christ at a early age at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, later becoming a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.

Rufus' love for sports introduced him to "The love of his life" Hollice Wilson. On June 17,1978 Rufus and Hollice were married in a small beautiful ceremony at Gardendale Community Baptist Church. Together they raised two beloved daughters, born 21 years apart, each a reflection of his strength, wisdom, and boundless love. He was immensely proud of his girls and treasured every moment spent guiding and cheering them on.

For 23 years, he served faithfully as Sports Director at the Davis-Scott YMCA, retiring in 2013. To generations of young athletes, he was more than a coach, Rufus was a mentor, role model, and steady voice of encouragement. He believed sports built character, discipline, and confidence, and he dedicated his life to shaping young lives both on and off the field.

Beyond athletics, he found his greatest joy in his family. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren, whether sharing stories, offering advice, or simply watching them grow. His eyes lit up around them, and his laughter filled the room. He also loved peaceful days spent fishing-rod in hand, heart at ease-finding serenity in the quiet beauty of the water. He will be remembered for his strong handshake, his warm smile, his competitive spirit, and his tender heart. He taught those around him the value of perseverance, loyalty, and showing up for the people you love.

Though he has taken his final rest, his legacy lives on-in the lives he mentored, the family he adored, and the countless games played under open skies.

Rufus is proceeded in death by his parents Rufus Miller, Sr. and Martha Jane Owens-Miller and his sister Brenda Lee-Daniels. He is survived by his devoted wife, Hollice Miller; daughters Marnina Berry and Khadijah "Dee" Miller (Kinney McCord II); cherished grandchildren Khalil McCord, Kinsley McCord and Khairo McCord; siblings, Roland Miller and Cynthia Perryman as well as a host of nieces and nephews and all who were blessed to know and love him.

His life was a blessing. His memory is a treasure. He will be deeply missed and forever held in our hearts.
