Rupert Ray Wilkes, age 87, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2025. Born on March 20, 1938, in Huntington, West Virginia, he was the son of Charles and Iva (Pulley) Wilks. Rupert was a proud member of the United States Army. He devoted 30 years of his life to the Jeep Corporation, where he made a lasting impact through his dedicated service.
A beloved husband, Rupert married the love of his life, Norma Jean, and together they raised a loving family. Norma Jean preceded him in death in 1989, leaving behind cherished memories of their life together.
Rupert was known for his generous spirit, always ready to lend a hand to family and friends, whether it was sharing food or providing support in times of need. He was particularly renowned for his savory bean soup and cornbread, as well as his delightful pumpkin pies, which will be fondly remembered by those who had the pleasure of experiencing his culinary skills.
In his leisure time, Rupert found joy in collecting Indian memorabilia, a testament to his appreciation for his heritage, and was also an avid car and music enthusiast. His passions were a reflection of his vibrant personality, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Rupert is survived by his children, Pam Brown, Richard (Danny) Mareaux, Denise (Terry) Caris, Lisa Wilkes, and John Wilkes; along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is additionally survived by his siblings, Robert (Brandi) Wilkes, Charles (Debbie) Wilkes, Gloria (Joe) Strasbourg, and Gladys Upchurch; and sisters-in-law, Martha Wilkes and Marlene Wilkes. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Norma Jean, and his siblings John, Larry, and Debbie.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Freck Funeral Chapel, located at 1155 S Wynn Rd. in Oregon, Ohio, on Sunday, October 12, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., with a time of sharing taking place at 4:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at Restlawn Memorial Park. Rupert leaves behind a legacy of kindness, love, and cherished memories that will remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
