Russ J. Dial, age 89 of
Rock Hill, SC, beloved husband, father, Pawpaw, brother, and uncle,
went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 1, 2026 at the Palmetto Patriot Home
for Veterans in
Gaffney, SC, where he spent the last several months enjoying the fellowship of
other veteran residents, exchanging stories of their times in the service. We would like to take
this opportunity to thank his nurses and caregivers at Palmetto Veterans' home for their
exceptional commitment to his care and comfort. He loved you all.
Russ was born April 12, 1936, in
Iron City, Tennessee. He was a career Air Force veteran with a
work ethic instilled while growing up. His first duty station was at the base in Morocco, North
Africa. He met Alice while stationed at Columbus Air Force Base,
Columbus, MS while she
worked at the Drug Store in town. After marriage, Russ served a total of twenty years, including
a tour to Viet Nam. He took Alice and the boys to assignments in France, Texas, Arkansas,
Mississippi and England before returning to the states to retire in
Rock Hill, SC. After retiring
from the service and settling in Rock Hill, Russ went to work with the City of Rock Hill, joining
the Buildings and Grounds Department, working another twenty years before permanently
retiring. During his time in Rock Hill, Russ joined Masonic Lodge #111 AFM where he enjoyed
fellowshipping and working with other Masons.
Russ is survived by his wife of 70 years, Alice Hayes Dial of
Rock Hill, SC and their three sons:
Richard Wayne Dial (Martha) of Smyrna, SC; Mike Dial (Joanna) of North Augusta, SC; and
Robert Dial (Amy) of Weddington, NC. Grandchildren include TC Dial of Indian Land, SC;
Richard Dial (Allyson) of York, SC; Andrew Dial of Blacksburg, SC; Michael Dial (Emily) of
Gastonia, NC; Amanda Dial of Waxhaw, NC; Hayley Stout of Lebanon, TN; and Dalton Stout of
Colombia, South America. Great-grandchildren include John, Connor, and Morrigan Dial all of
York, SC; Ashlyn Dial of North Augusta, SC; and Dash Dial of Gastonia, NC. He is also survived
by numerous nieces and nephews and their children. All these family members held a special
place in Russ's heart.
Russ was the third of seven children born to Andy Floyd Dial and Florence Dodd Dial. He was
preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings: JD, Juanita, Clarence, Frances, Margaret,
Agnes, and Hershal Dial, of Rosedale, MS and Dundee, FL.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, February 9, 2026, at Green Funeral Home NW
Chapel at 2:00 with the Rev. Bob Knight officiating, and special music by Mr. Jackie Kirkland.
Visitation will be before the service beginning at 1:00.
Interment will follow the service at Grandview Memorial Park, 620 South Cherry Road, Rock
Hill, SC Russ will receive full military honors for service to his country.
