Russell Dale Mitchell, 65, of Columbus passed away on June 5, 2025. Born on June 20, 1959 in Starkville, MS, Rusty, as he was affectionately known, was a gifted athlete who brought energy, charm, and a bit of swagger into any room he entered. In his younger years at New Hope High School, he earned admiration on the football and baseball fields and left a lasting impression on teammates and opponents alike. Rusty’s passions included watching sporting events, playing pool, and throwing darts. Whether chalking a cue stick or aiming for a bullseye, Rusty found joy in competition and camaraderie.

Rusty was of the Baptist faith and worked as a corrosion control maintenance technician at Columbus Air Force Base for over 20 years.

Survivors include his sisters, Denise O'Brian (Dink) of Smithville and Michelle Mitchell of Columbus; brother, Robbie Mitchell (Pat) of Columbus; nephew, Chris O'Brian (Nikki) of Smithville; niece, Torie O'Brian of Brandon; great-nephews, Luke O'Brian (Hailey) of Mantachie and Lane O'Brian of Amory; and great-niece, Tenley O'Brian of Brandon, step-siblings Edward Patton, Tamela Patton Jordan, Tiffany Patton Browning and their families. He was preceded in death by his father, Coy Mitchell, mother, Dot Chesser Patton and step-father, Jim Patton. Rusty also leaves behind numerous beloved cousins and friends.

A private family service will be held at a later date, with burial beside his mother.

In lieu of flowers, contributions reflecting Rusty’s love for animals can be made to the Columbus-Lowndes Humane Society, 50 Airline Road, Columbus, MS 39701, the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, PO Box 1746, Starkville, MS 39760, or to the charity of your choice.

Our brother is at peace - all glory to God.
