Russell Max Obar

Services for Russell Max Obar, 77, of Troup will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Whitehouse with Pastor Bennie Portwood officiating. Interment will follow at Griffin Cemetery between Troup and New Summerfield under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mr. Obar passed away peacefully at his home in Troup on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2025. He was born January 28, 1948, in the community of Blackjack, Texas to Allen and Margaret Lacy Obar. Russ was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. He graduated from Troup High School in June of 1966 and quickly enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served on active and reserve duty, rising to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer until June of 1992. He also worked concurrently as a Houston Firefighter for 23 years before retiring as a Senior Captain in 1998. Russ and his family relocated back to the Troup area where he served as City Administrator for the city of Troup for seven years before retiring in 2009. Russ was preceded in death by his parents Allen and Margaret Lacy Obar and his sister Marie Obar Carter. He is survived by his loving family including his wife of 43 years, Susan "Aris" Obar, his son, Russell Gregory Allen Obar (Karen), his daughter, Arin Cody Obar Vilo (Wess), his grandchildren, Niles Obar (Adrianna), Blythe Obar, William Obar, Deegan Vilo and Dillon Vilo, sister, Barbara Obar McGraw, brother, Claude Lacy Obar (C.K.), sister, Delight Obar Dowdy and sister, Rita Obar Jackson. Pallbearers will be Anson Carpenter, Lanse Carpenter, Reyan Carpenter, Tris Carpenter, Michael Shenk, and Noah Shenk Visitation is scheduled from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6th at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
