Russell “Russ” Edward Ross Sr., age 78, of Merrill, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 3, 2024, at the Aspirus Hospital in Wausau, WI. He was born on September 24, 1945, to the late Bennie and Liz (Eland) Ross in Gary, Indiana. Russ attended and graduated from high school in Black Oak, IN before enlisting in the United States Army to bravely serve his country, until his honorable discharge in 1967. Russ met his soul mate and love of his life, Cheryl Gray, and the two exchanged marriage vows on September 7, 1968. Sadly, Cheryl passed away on August 30, 1985, and he had missed her dearly every day thereafter.

Russ worked in the heavy oils division for Amoco Oil Refinery for over 30 years, until his retirement. He kept himself busy with various part time jobs and his hobbies. Russ enjoyed being outdoors, and socializing with friends and family. He cherished his grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to spend time with them. Russ will always be remembered for his witty sense of humor, telling the worst dad jokes and being very kind, thoughtful and generous. Russ will be sadly missed, but his love and kindness will live on.

Russ is survived by his two sons: Russell “Butch” Ross Jr. (Shari Rodriguez) of Merrill and William “Bill” Ross of Milwaukee, grandchildren: Cameron and Sara Ross, nephew: Steven Ross, niece: Danielle “Sissy” Story and great niece: Carissa Ross-Gomez. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife: Cheryl, brother: Richard “Snake” Ross and nephew: Bennie John “BJ” Ross.

A ceremony and military honors will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at Waid Funeral Home, with a gathering at Butch’s house to follow.
