Russell Glen Tanner, 59, of EL Paso, TX, passed away on September 2, 2023.
Russell was born January 6, 1964, to Betty Nell and Dean Tanner in Anthony, NM. Russell was a proud graduate of Gadsen High School and an avid supporter of Texas Tech University.
Russell was predeceased by his mother, Betty Nell Tanner, brother Kenneth Tanner, and grandparents Horace and Opal Cannon as well as his uncle Don Cannon. He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Renee “Baby Doll” Tanner, and his cherished only son Cody Tanner. He is also survived by his brother Bruce Tanner. He leaves behind the other loves of his life, Lexi “Chainsaw” and Hallie Tanner, Beloved family dogs.
The Motto Russell lived by was “Life is Good”. He woke up early every morning seizing each day. His daily inspirational Facebook posts were what kick-started people’s days on a positive note. He chose to be happy and grateful for every single day. He was the reason people smiled. His impact was immeasurable.
Whether he was organizing the weekly Taco Night gathering at The Riv or just encouraging people to choose happiness. Russell was the life of the party and he never met a stranger. His 31 years of sobriety was something he was very proud of, and would always help those in need of encouragement.

I first met "Rusty" when I was about 16 and started working at Dos Lagos Golf Course. He was around 10 then and would hang out there all the time. He was always a great guy.

"Life is Good." I often think back to what a great childhood I had. A big reason for that was great people and great friends like Russell Tanner.
A favorite post-high-school vehicle purchase of mine was a "Tanner approved" ´77 Jeep CJ5. Russell went with me to look at it and give his approval. I bought it due to great teenage memories of Jeep´n in the Anthony sand dunes with Russell and his brother in Bruce´s CJ and also memories of us riding in the Gillet Willys Jeep.

Russell was a great childhood friend. We grew up living 7 miles apart in a rural area. When we were teenagers, he would ride his 10-speed to my house, or I would ride my motorcycle to his to hang out together. Sometimes we would go play golf and sometimes I would pick him up & he would bring his bicycle so he could ride home later. The two of us & golf clubs or the two of us and him riding backwards carrying his bicycle on my 100cc motorcycle. I´m sure that was quite a site for other drivers to see.

When we were young kids, Russell showed me how he would heat up a flour tortilla on his mom's gas stove. A few days later, my mom was slightly annoyed with me for the burnt tortilla debris I left on her electric stove.

Russell was truly one of a kind. His positively was insurmountable. I met him as soon as I moved here in 89. His wonderful wife who he loved dearly and was always proud of made the perfect team of compassion and kindness for people and animals. I'm going to miss him and his "Life is good" posts. That was his mantra and it will live on. I will miss him. Love and prayers to Renee and Cody.
