Ruth Ann Kohnen, AKA Ruthie and Sissy (née Pitsenbarger), 74, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Born on March 18, 1951, in Bellburn, West Virginia, Ruth grew up surrounded by the warmth and love of a large family. At the age of 18, she embarked on a new journey by moving to Chicago with her grandmother. There, she built a life filled with new friendships and community, living for many years in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs before relocating to Salisbury in 2021 to live with her sister Carol.
Family was the cornerstone of Ruthie’s life. She was previously married to Edward, and together they raised three daughters: Tanya (Brian), Michelle (Mary), and Samantha (Adam). Ruth poured her heart into motherhood, nurturing strong and independent women who carry forward her spirit. Her love extended deeply to her grandchildren—Jake (25), Sierra (24), Skylar (23), Dylan (20), Marley (18), and Kelsey (28)—whom she adored "to the moon and back." She took immense pride in their accomplishments and found great joy in celebrating their milestones. Ruth Ann aka Sissy, or Sis, shared an enduring bond with her siblings: Gary (Corina), Carol, Lyain (Barry), Ernie, Steve (Debbie), Tammy, Darceal, and David (Tammy). Family gatherings were among her most treasured moments—times filled with laughter, storytelling, and heartfelt connection. She also fondly remembered her predeceased brothers Richard (Susan) and Bobby (Shirley), holding their memories close to her heart.
Ruth’s professional journey began with her training as a hairdresser—a craft she pursued with both skill and heart. Her salon chair became more than just a place for beauty; it was a sanctuary where people laughed and cried freely and lifelong connections were made. Even after transitioning into the corporate world with MPC then Grainger, Ruth continued to style hair on the side, offering her talents and companionship to those who cherished and trusted her.
Throughout her life, Ruth faced challenges with unwavering determination. Whether juggling multiple jobs or confronting serious health hurdles, she met each obstacle head-on. Her ability to transform adversity into moments of sweetness reflected the strength of her character. Except when it came to the Apple IPhone. That IPhone was the bane of her existence. If you didn't know, turn around and ask someone near you, I guarantee they did know. Those who knew Ruth will remember her as hardworking, loving, kind-hearted—and wonderfully sassy. Her smile could light up any room; her honesty was refreshing and humbling; her loyalty to family was unwavering. She gave selflessly whenever she could, leaving a permanent mark on countless lives through simple acts of kindness and profound gestures of love.
Ruth loved cheering on Chicago sports teams. She spent numerous hours watching the Cubs, The Blackhawks and the Bears with Michelle, Brian and Adam. Ruth had a passion for crafting projects for friends and family. She also loved Spring when she could get outside and plant flowers while Izzy, her dog, aka her baby, sat with her in the yard.
A Celebration of Life service will be held in Chicago, IL in June. Service details will be announced once they are available.
