Ruth E. Blodgett
Hanover, NH - Ruth Emerson Blodgett, age 88, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at Kendal of Hanover in Hanover, NH.
Born November 21, 1936 and raised in Auburn, New York, Ruth met the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Blodgett, there in 1953. They married in 1957, beginning a partnership that would span 63 years. Together, they shared a lifetime of travel and adventure, including eight years living in London over two decades. Ruth cherished British life and built a beloved collection of Royal Family tins.
Having left UConn in 1957 before graduation, Ruth was proud to finish her UConn degree in 1995. She continued her interest in learning by participating in many Osher classes once she and Dick moved to Hanover in 1999.
A gifted homemaker and creative spirit, Ruth found joy in sewing, knitting, needlepoint, and baking cookies and pies. Summers at the family cottage on Mascoma Lake in Enfield, NH were her happiest days-gardening, picking blueberries, pickling and jam-making, canoeing, and taking rides in Dick's Chris-Craft, the Carrie C. She loved spotting loons, keeping a tidy home, and sharing home-cooked meals.
An avid reader, Ruth often visited the library with a basket in hand, favoring historical fiction and mysteries. She enjoyed music and the performing arts, attending theater in London's West End, and as a regular subscriber to Upper Valley venues, including the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College and Northern Stage in White River Junction, VT. Throughout her life, Ruth sang in church choirs and later joined the Kendal Chorus. A lifelong walker, she delighted in exploring the streets of London and the paths around Kendal. Always stylish, she was voted "Best Dressed" in high school and remained known at Kendal for her coordinated hats, scarves, and coats.
Ruth was active in her communities, as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution of Wilton, CT (Drum Hill Chapter); the Garden Clubs of Wilton and Hanover; the Congregational Church of Wilton and the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College; the Enfield Shaker Museum; and the American Women's Club of London. She was also a devoted caregiver throughout her life, looking after her paternal grandmother, aunt, and many other Morse family relatives in Enfield and Enfield Center, NH.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Esther Ridyard and Frederic H. Emerson, older brother, Frederic (Ricky) Emerson, and beloved husband, Dick. She is survived by her younger brother, Geoffrey C. Emerson (Gary Chan) of Hong Kong, her two daughters, Susan Russell (Jim) of Cambridge, MA and Karen Blodgett (Don Taylor) of San Francisco, CA, and her two grandsons John Russell (Danielle Godsin) of Somerville, MA and Tom Russell (Katie Sherburne) of Waltham, MA.
Her family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring staff and community of Kendal of Hanover.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in Ruth's memory may be made to Planned Parenthood or the
Alzheimer's Association.
