Ruth C. Comstock

Ruth C. Comstock, 97, of Jeannette, formerly of Midlothian, Va., died peacefully with family by her side Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021. She was the beloved wife of the late George Jay Comstock for 61 years; proud mother of four sons, William Jay (Carolyn) of Escondido, Calif., Robert John (Joyce), of Irwin, the late Thomas James (Anne) of Covington, Ky., and George Jeffrey, of Bon Air, Va.; loving grandmother of Carrie (Mathias) Schwender, David (Carise) Comstock, Benjamin Comstock, Megan (Tyler) Williams, Allison (Phil) Chapman, Gregory (Colleen) Comstock, Michael (Gina) Comstock, Grant (Hannah) Comstock, Rene Comstock and sixteen great-grandchildren; aunt of Ann (Paul) Spangler; daughter of the late Harold and Amanda Christoph; and sister of the late Helen Jones. Ruth worked as a registered nurse following training in Chicago at Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing (1945). She met George while he was stationed in Chicago with the Army and they were married Nov. 24, 1945, in Waukesha, Wis. Upon raising her family in Niles, Ohio, Ruth returned to nursing in 1964 and retired in 1982. In Niles, she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. Her interests included family, her faith, gardening, sewing, knitting and reading. As longtime active volunteers, she and her husband, George, pursued training and volunteer work in Americus, Ga., at Koinonia Farm during the founding of Habitat for Humanity in the late 1970s. Upon their relocation from Ohio to Midlothian in 1985, they joined a small group in founding what is now Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity. Ruth was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church and more recently Bon Air Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held at Bon Air at a date to be determined.
