Funeral service for Ruth Davis, age 86, of Sulphur Springs, will be held at 2:00p.m. Sunday, October 29, 2023 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Chapel with Dr. Jeff Gravens, Fred Lewis and C.J. Duffey officiating. Interment will follow at the City Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00p.m. Saturday, October 28, 2023 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home. Mrs. Davis passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
Ruth Davis was born May 30, 1937 in Joinerville, TX to Thomas Walter Vaughn and Myrtle Alma (Olliff) Vaughn. She graduated from Gaston High School in Joinerville and then Tyler Commercial College with her business degree. She married Vernon Davis on February 4, 1956 in Turnertown, TX. She had a long, successful career at Rockwell in Sulphur Springs as their payroll clerk for twenty-six years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs since 1961. While there, she served as Director of the Diamond Set Group and Secretary of the Radio & TV Bible Class. She worked in countless vacation bible schools, took many mission trips to Milwaukee, WI, and belonged to Community Bible Study. Ruth also served as the Secretary for the Hopkins County Veterans Memorial Committee.
Ruth’s pride and joy were her family. She was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Aside from serving her church and community, she loved to read, watch TV, and bowl. She also enjoyed playing 42 and Mexican Train with her lady friends. Ruth and Vernon belonged to a camping club that went camping in their motorhomes once a month to central state roundups in May and national roundups in August each year.
She is survived by her loving children, Kenny Davis and wife, Cindy, of Sulphur Springs, Randy Davis and wife, Barbara, of Tolar, TX, Donna Morgan and husband, Jon, of Sulphur Springs; grandchildren, Aaron Hanna (Jordan), Heather Barker (Justin), Danielle White (Shawn), Jarod Morgan (Kassidy), Leah Bellows, Marisa Davis (Ben), Taryn Blackman (Hunter); sixteen great-grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon; and brother, Billy Joe Vaughn.
Memorials can be made in her memory to the Radio & TV Bible Class, c/o First Baptist Church, 116 Oak Ave., Sulphur Springs, TX 75482.
