Ruth Louise Hardy, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025, at Anne Arundel Medical Center, surrounded by love. Born in Harlem, New York, on September 15, 1935, Ruth lived a life that radiated warmth, compassion, and resilience.

In 1948, Ruth met the love of her life, Joseph Anthony Hardy, Sr., and together they began a journey that would span five decades of unwavering devotion. They were married on September 15, 1956, Ruth’s 21st birthday, and shared a bond so deep that their love story became an inspiration to all who knew them.

During Joseph’s service in the U.S. Air Force, Ruth’s adventurous spirit led her to embrace life in every new place they called home, from Brooklyn and Philadelphia to two memorable years in Hawaii, before finally settling in Maryland in 1966, where the Hardy family built their lasting roots in Odenton.

Professionally, Ruth dedicated many years as a supervisor for the telephone company, where her patience, leadership, and ability to connect with people left a lasting mark on colleagues and customers alike. She retired in the late 1980s, leaving behind a legacy of diligence and kindness.

Ruth’s joy came from nurturing others through her cooking, her stories, and her deep love for family. She never met a stranger, and her home was a place where laughter was abundant and no one ever left her presence without feeling cared for. She was especially adored by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who spent countless hours listening to her captivating stories filled with humor, wisdom, and the richness of a well-lived life. Ruth would often playfully ask her grandchildren, “Guess what?” and they would always exclaim, “I love you!”

Ruth also had a love for travel, shopping, and celebrating life’s simple pleasures, whether she was exploring new places, sharing meals with loved ones, or finding the perfect card or gift that showed she was thinking of you. Her generosity of spirit and her radiant smile made every space brighter.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Joseph A. Hardy, Sr.; her beloved daughter, Marion L. Hardy; her sister, Mary Elizabeth Page-Brown; and several other treasured family members.

In her final days, Ruth’s words carried a message that now feels like her lasting gift to all of us. During a moment with family, she softly repeated the phrase, “Pick your head up,” over and over. At the time, it felt like encouragement for one person, but now we know it was meant for everyone who loved her. Though our hearts ache with loss, we will honor her by doing just that, picking our heads up, carrying on, and living with the grace, strength, and love she taught us. Her legacy of faith, family, and kindness will continue to shine through the lives of those she left behind.
