Ruth T. (Tillson) Lowell, of Winchester, passed away on Saturday May 19th, 2018. She was 90 years of age. Ruth received her nursing diploma from Mass General in 1949. She loved her role as nurse, homemaker and mother to her children and to all the neighborhood kids she enjoyed. She was the mom who allowed the kids to rip up the lawn playing capture the flag or to race around the house, playing hide and seek Everyone participated in the latest craft project whether it was candle making, knitting, baking or making Christmas Ornaments. Want to work on a puzzle? There was one in construction on a table where adults and kids could sit quietly or chat about almost anything. This remained true even after she moved to assisted living last July. Ruth's love of animals reached beyond cats and dogs. She rescued and nursed to health numerous squirrels, bunnies, birds and other critters her crazy kids dragged in. The Lowell family always babysat the school iguanas or other fuzzy creatures during holiday breaks. Those baby gerbils had to go somewhere! Ruth was a member of the Winchester Garden Club as well as an avid tennis player and book reader well into her senior years. She never strived for the meticulous house, the fancy jewels or keeping up with the Jones! She cherished the importance of family, friends, nature, blue jeans and honesty. Years after the death of her husband Dren, she met her companion, Howie Blanchard. The two were town in town as the cute older couple who walked everywhere holding hands. They were a pair to be reckoned with. Into their mid eighties, Ruth and Howie could be found high up on ladders or doing yard work. They always bragged how fortunate they were to have found love twice. Ruth leaves her family after a very brief illness. Reflecting upon the past, it's clear how she enjoyed a life out of the lime light. That said, she could be depended on for an outstretched hand, a hot meal or a room in the inn. Her shoes could be filled by few. Ruth was the beloved wife of the late J. Drennan Lowell, MD. She was the mother of Drennan Lowell and his wife Cathie, John Lowell and his wife Stephanie, Tom Lowell and his wife Susan, Ali Lowell and the late Anne Lowell. Grandmother of 8. Dear sister of the late Jack Tillson and Priscilla Thatcher. Predeceased by her companion of 20 years, Howard M. Blanchard. At Ruth's request services will be private. Please consider donations in memory of Ruth to Cat Tales Rescue, 920 Lafayette Rd., #201, Seabrook, NH 03874 or at www.cattalesnh.org or any other animal rescue.

After her husband "Doc Lowell" died in 1987, Mrs. Lowell sold me one of "Doc's" miniature steam engines. I last saw Mrs. Lowell about 10 years ago when she and Howard stopped in my place of business. We talked for a while about the old times and the little steam engines. I remember their house in Winchester. I was only inside it 2 or 3 times in 1987, but I remember it well. There was a big train set in the attic, too! My condolences to Mrs. Lowell's family and friends. I was never more than an "acquaintance", but she was always nice to me during those couple/few times our paths crossed over the years.

Ruth will be deeply missed in our neighborhood. Just as her charming red house sat at the center of our figure eight, so she anchored us among all the transitions on Jefferson and Lawson Roads. Ruth was our beloved neighbor who had lived here before any of the rest of us ever moved in. Godspeed, Ruth!

What a lovely obituary - definitely describes the neighbor I grew up with and was fortunate enough to live near for the past 13 years. I fondly remember playing tennis on her backboard and sailing my Barbie boat in the stream behind her home. She will be remembered for her kind and compassionate spirit.

I was a neighbor,(2 Goddu Ave) and a member of the Winchester UU church and a member of a quilting group that met at Ruth's house. We put together a Friendship quilt, with each member adding a block for everyone quilts... It is a lovely memory of all the people who were in that group. I loved her big red farm house, and the warmth she gave to it.

Such a truly independent lady! Ruth will be remembered with a smile and great fondness.
To all of the family- remember all of the good times and eventually it may not be as painful. The missing of your mom never goes away though.
Her legacy is that she did her job , which was to raise a wonderful and caring family.

I will always remember Ruth as a patient of mine for many years. I always looked forward to seeing her. We also shared a great interest in doing puzzles. One time she brought me 3 bags full of puzzles she had done. To this day I think of her while I do puzzles. I always have one in going on. My thoughts are with the family during this time.
