Ruth N. Loy, age 97, longtime resident of the New Washington area, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at Trustwell Living at the Carlisle Place in
Bucyrus, Ohio. She was born on June 17, 1927 in Bucyrus to the late Frank and Bertha (Leonberger) Scheffler.
As one of the last graduates from the Holmes Liberty class of 1945, Ruth worked briefly in the banking industry before starting her family. She married Wilmer "Lefty" Loy on February 19, 1950 and they were blessed with 7 wonderful children. In addition to raising their children, Ruth enjoyed gardening, canning, baking and sewing. She loved to crochet; a hobby that allowed her to make many special gifts for her family, most memorably the doilies she gifted to her grandchildren for their weddings.
Her family was very important to her, and she supported them in all of their endeavors; whether it meant tagging along to a harness race with Wilmer, teaching some of her children how to play the piano or attending her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren's sporting events. Ruth was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church in New Washington where she was active in various groups within the church.
Ruth is survived by her loving husband of 75 years, Wilmer Loy; six children, Carol (Jack) Thompson, Martha "Marty" Burger, Marlene (Steve) Karl, Diana Loy (Carl Dentinger), Sandra (Mike) Kaple and Phil (Shelli) Loy; fourteen grandchildren, Angie (Shannon) Chaffins, Kendra (Brad) Studer, Ryan (Carly) Burger, Chad (Ashley) Burger, Scott (Emily) Burger, Jeremy (Lorraine) Karl, Nicole (Kris) Hanlon, Liza (Chris) Hafner, Brandon (Jocelyn) Kaple, Nathan (Kim) Kaple, Brad (Brittany) Kaple, Kristin (Keith) Clune, Grant Loy (Olivia Knapp) and Max Loy (Madi Cooke); 36 great grandchildren; sister, Helen Ross; sister-in-law, Julia Scheffler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by a son, Allan W. Loy; son-in-law, Tom Burger; grandson, Jack Thompson II; two brothers, Wayne (Betty) Scheffler and Milton Scheffler; and brothers-in-law, Myron Ross, Calvin (Doris) Loy and Donald (Esther) Loy.
Family and friends are invited to visit at St. John's Lutheran Church in New Washington on Thursday, March 6, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Ruth's funeral service will be held at the church on Friday, March 7, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Kevin Mohr officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in New Washington. Memorial contributions can be made to St. John's Lutheran Church or Chatfield Volunteer Fire Department.
