Ruth McEwan Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 28, 2026.
After a lengthy hospital stay, Ruth Pamela McEwan, 99, of Loganville, GA, passed into the arms of Jesus in the comfort of her home the evening of March 23, 2026. Pam's passing leaves a void that can never be filled in the hearts of all that knew and loved her. She was a God fearing, stoic, steadfast woman and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and loyal friend.

Pam was born in Grand Island, Nebraska on September 2, 1926 to the late George Lester Webb and Edith Elizabeth (Hall) Webb. She preferred to go by the name Pam, because she associated Ruth with only being used when she got into trouble as a child. If you knew Pam, you would know that she was an exceptionally quiet, shy and introverted person. She was also an ardent rule follower that couldn't have been in trouble very often. Well, there was that time when she had a bunch of young chicks that she thought were cold, so she put them in the oven to keep them warm. That did not turn out well and just might have been the turning point of her not being fond of being called Ruth!

Pam had very humble beginnings and learned about survival and resilience at a very young age while growing up in the Great Depression. She started her education in a one room schoolhouse in Nebraska. Yes, she actually walked miles to get there and back in the snow, sleet and rain (it may even have been uphill both ways). She would recall going to that one room schoolhouse with dust covered floors and desks during the dust bowl era.

She graduated from Odessa High School in Odessa, NE and went on to get a B.S. degree in nursing at Clarkson College in Omaha, Nebraska. Upon graduation from Clarkson College, Pam moved to California for her first job as a Registered Nurse. It wasn't long after moving to California that she met a young airman with the US Air Force, the love of her life, James "Jimmy" McEwan. Pam and Jimmy were married on October 30,1953 and spent the years of Jimmy's military career being transferred across the country every twelve to twenty-four months. These frequent moves resulted in them having their six (very close in age) children in five different states (CA, MA, HI, DE and PA). Being the devoted military wife that she was, Pam juggled the many moves with her infants and toddlers in tow, without protest - as was her way.

Pam's children were her pride and joy. She was a devoted mother that raised her children with a loving but strict hand to be independent, to have strong values and to have a solid work ethic.

Pam was a two time breast cancer survivor and a quiet force that handled any and all adversity with absolutely no complaints - about anything. She lived her life with purpose, joy, grace, humility and an indomitable spirit.

Pam absolutely loved reading and learning from anything she could get her hands on, but she also loved gardening, bird watching, bowling, playing weekly Mexican Dominoes with her sweet friends in Loganville, GA and the card game May-I during holidays with her cherished family. She continued most of these activities until shortly before her recent hospitalizations.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, James Aloysious McEwan, her firstborn Pamella Louise McEwan, her youngest James Aloysious McEwan Jr., as well as her brothers Roy Lester Webb and Leonard Marvin Webb.

She is survived by her children, Major Robert Anthony McEwan, U.S. Army, retired, Daria Bridgett (Dennis) Ficco, Mary Colleen McEwan and Margaret Helen McEwan. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Veronica (Jesse) Cloyd, Jacqueline Ficco, Kathleen (Chris) Rondem, Paul Hunt, Kyle Hunt, Ryan Schock and James Aloysious McEwan III; and by her four great-grandchildren, Avery Grace Cloyd, Jackson Randall Cloyd, Brody Hunt and Kyle Hunt Jr.

Funeral Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. Details will be determined at a future date based on Arlington's availability. Information will be updated as we receive it, but Pam's services at Arlington will most likely be sometime this summer.

It would be Pam's wish that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (https://www.bcrf.org/other-ways-give/) or FurKids Rescue Shelter (https://furkids.org/donation).
