Ruth Olsen Obituary
Ruth Olsen
June 17, 1941 - June 9, 2024
Ruth Olsen, a beloved mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2024, in Grand Ledge, Michigan, just days before her 83rd birthday. Born on June 17, 1941, in San Antonio, Texas, Ruth lived a life full of love, dedication, and service to others.
She loved the Lord and made sure all her children were baptized and were raised in the church. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, downtown Lansing.
Ruth began her career as a telephone operator in Sunfield, Michigan, demonstrating her commitment to helping others early on. She later became a police dispatcher in Portland, Michigan, where her calm and composed demeanor comforted many during a crisis. Ruth's career journey also led her to work as a medical assistant, where she continued to provide care and support to those in need.
Raising seven children, Ruth's home was always filled with love, warmth, and the delightful aromas of her exceptional cooking. Her yeast lunch rolls, and bunny cakes were a family favorite, and her skills in the kitchen were unmatched. Ruth's hobbies included sewing and crocheting, and she found immense joy in creating beautiful pieces for her family and friends. An avid reader, she cherished her visits to the library, always eager to discover new stories and knowledge. She very much valued education and encouraged her family to further their education and continue the path of lifelong learning.
Ruth sincerely appreciated nature, particularly her favorite flowers: tulips, four o'clocks, and Russian sage, which she lovingly tended in her garden. She and Wendell enjoyed good times camping in the motorhome with the grands and their fur babies. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she treasured spending Christmas Eve with her family, creating cherished memories that will last forever.
Her knowledge and passion for gemstones were remarkable, nearly reaching expert level. However, Ruth's genuine pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. Her love for them knew no bounds, and she was their fiercest protector, always ready to offer her unwavering support and guidance.
Ruth is survived by her devoted children, who will continue to honor her legacy of love and strength. Scott (Elfriede) Smith of Fort Worth, TX, Leslie (John) Prame of Grand Ledge, MI, Lee (Brian) Chassee, of Byron Center, MI, Lynda (Tom) Eckstrom, of Kennesaw, GA, Claudia Smith-Alderink, of Woodland, MI, J.J. (Alan) Farmer, of Helena, AL, 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren who were the light of her life. Siblings, Gloria Leos, of Hastings, MI, Mary Pitch, of Portland, MI, Linda Leos, of Boerne TX, Manuel (Joan) Leos, of Hastings, MI, Clem (Maria recently deceased) Leos, of Birmingham, AL, and Julian Leos, of Grand Ledge, MI, half-sibling Maria (Kim) Richardson and many loved nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Richard Wendell Olsen, and her son, Berndale James Gillaspie and other cherished family members, including her precious mother Soledad (Sally) Leos.
Graveside Tribute Service 11:00 AM - Thursday June 13, 2024 at the Sunfield Cemetery, with visitation/viewing 10:30 AM - 10:45 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Capital Area Humane Society, a cause close to Ruth's heart.
Ruth Olsen's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Ruth's kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for her family will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace, dear Ruth. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
