Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cartwright Funeral Home - Randolph on Jul. 4, 2025.
Ruth C. (Cross) Olsen, of Randolph, formerly of Milton, a cherished matriarch and beacon of kindness, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, at the age of 104, after a long illness. Born in Dorchester on January 22, 1921, to the late Charles and Elma (Pond) Cross, Ruth's life was a testament to her enduring faith, love, and service to others.
Ruth's journey began in the heart of a loving family, and she grew up to be a woman of strength and character, deeply rooted in her community. She was a proud graduate of Milton High School, where she formed lifelong friendships and developed a passion for learning that she carried throughout her life. Ruth's professional path led her to become a dedicated sales clerk, first at Jordan Marsh and then at Macy's at the South Shore Plaza, where her warmth and genuine care for customers made her a beloved figure.
Ruth's heart found its match in the late Robert Olsen, with whom she shared a beautiful marriage. Together, they created a family and a home filled with love and laughter. She was a devoted mother to Ruth A. Olsen of Randolph, and the late Barbara, Charles, and Carol Olsen. Her love extended to her siblings, the late Dorothy Jones, Charles Cross, Flora Campbell, and Henry Cross, and her spirit lives on in the many nieces and nephews who were blessed to know her.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, as evidenced by her 77 years of active membership at the First Congregational Church in Randolph. Ruth's service to her church community was multifaceted; she taught Sunday School, served as a Deacon, and brought music to worship as one of the handbell ringers. Her commitment to her faith was also expressed through her quilting, creating blankets for new babies baptized at the church and a special blanket for the Randolph Fire Department.
Ruth's involvement in the community was extensive and varied. She was a respected Worthy Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the N.E Handcarvers Association, the South Shore Viking Club in Braintree, and the Randolph Women's Club. Her commitment to service shone brightly through her active participation in the Randolph Senior Center and the Council on Aging.
An avid golfer, traveler, and volunteer, Ruth's zest for life was infectious. Her kind and loving nature made her a joy to be around, and she cherished the time spent with family and friends. Ruth's legacy is one of unwavering faith, boundless love, and a life of service that touched the hearts of all who knew her. She will be remembered as a guiding light, a source of comfort, and a true example of a life well-lived. Ruth's memory will forever be treasured and her impact felt for generations to come.
