Ruth Owen Obituary
Ruth Ann (Martin) Owen, 81, of Tiffin, passed away peacefully Thursday February 5, 2026.
She was born in Willard, May 26, 1944, to Glenn and Helen (Vogel) Martin.
Ruth graduated from Attica High School in 1962 and went on to attend Sandusky School of Practical Nursing, beginning a lifelong career devoted to caring for others. She spent over 20 years in the emergency room at Tiffin Mercy Hospital and then worked alongside Dr. John Vela for 40 years, during which she became known for her compassion, dedication, and extensive medical knowledge. She truly loved her work and was always the go-to person for medical questions, offering comfort and reassurance to patients, friends, and family alike.
Outside of work, Ruth found joy in the simple things. She loved Barry Manilow and was a devoted, longtime watcher of Days of Our Lives. These daily comforts brought her happiness and were a cherished part of her routine.
Above all else, Ruth was an amazing mom and grammie, a great friend, and a wonderful sister. Her caring spirit extended far beyond her profession; she had a rare gift for making people feel heard, safe, and deeply loved.
She is survived by daughter, Ann Kear; grandchildren, Paige Kear (Sam Weaver) and Parker Kear; sister, Mary (Gary) Solomon; brother, Don (Jan) Martin; sister-in-law, Bev Martin; longtime companion, Scott Hurley; and many loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by parents, Glenn and Helen Martin; brother, Carl Martin; niece, Jackie Martin; and son-in-law, Jim Kear.
Ruth's kindness, devotion, and gentle strength will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Elmwood Memory Care Unit in Fremont, Heartland Hospice, and Clyde Gardens.
A memorial service for Ruth will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 11 , 2026, at Engle-Shook Funeral Home & Crematory in Tiffin. Visitation for family and friends will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Attica-Venice Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contribu-tions may be made to Heartland Hospice or a charity of the donor's choice.

TO Family, Ruth was a friend at school, she & Sharon Erbs had a bridal shower for me in May of 1962, She was a very friendly lady & very kind hearted. As a patient of John's for almost 40 years, Ruth was a pleasure to see on my visits.....condolences to all, may she Rest in Peace.

Ruth will be remembered and missed by many!! She cared for my family along side of Dr. John for years!! What a beautiful angel of a strong woman she was!! It was like family going to the doctor especially if Ruth was there to greet us. I will never forget her. Praise Jesus for sweet saints like her that helped us through sickness and stress!! Hugs to all who are missing her!!
