Ruth Sherfey Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 17, 2026.
Ruth Allene Sanders Sherfey departed this earthly life on March 13, 2026. Because she trusted in Jesus Christ as her Savior, she knew that she was destined for her Heavenly home. She was born in Danville, Georgia on July 3, 1937. Most of her growing up years were spent near Pensacola, Florida.

For most of her life, Ruth was a homemaker. She was a good Southern cook- fluffy biscuits, caramel cake, cornbread, fried chicken, vegetables, etc. In previous days, she enjoyed fishing, reading, and gardening. In recent days while in assisted living, she enjoyed visits from family, especially great grandchildren. As a military wife, she was married to Capt. John Voss for 14 years. Then, she served as a pastor's wife to Rev. Clarence O'Briant for 31 years as they served churches in eastern North Carolina. For the past nearly 11 years, she and Allan Sherfey brought each other much companionship and joy. Allan was a faithful and loving husband who patiently put Ruth's needs above his own.

She was a member of Jerusalem Methodist Church in Greene County but had been unable to attend in recent years due to declining health. Some of her favorite hymns were "In the Garden" and "I'll Meet You in the Morning." One of her favorite books in the Bible was the book of James.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Hoke and Allene Sanders; husband, Capt. John Voss; husband, Rev. Clarence O'Briant; son, Mike Voss; brother, Bobby Sanders; brotherly cousin, Dyerl Howell; two sons-in-law, Joey Arthur and Gary Stafford. She is survived by her husband, Allan Sherfey; daughters, Donna Arthur and Angie Stafford; stepsons Mark O'Briant, Paul O'Briant, John O'Briant, and Christopher Sherfey; many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Many thanks to the entire staff of Meadowview Assisted Living Center where she resided for nearly 2 years receiving compassionate care. Special thanks to Tina Watson, Tammy Howell, and Harley Reese. Thanks to the entire staff of Amedisys Hospice Care for their recent support, especially nurse Callista DeVaney and chaplain Edisson Etienne.

A private family and friends celebration of life service will be held at a future date.
