Sabina Elizabeth Mahoney
"That lady could take down a battleship if she had to."
Those were the words of a World War II veteran and fellow resident at Sabina's care facility-and at 93 Sabina Elizabeth Mahoney was still sending plenty of attitude into the world. And rightly so.
Widowed far too young when her beloved husband, Joseph, died in 1969, Sabina was just 37 years old and left to raise three young children on her own. She forged ahead with grit, determination, and love, working for Gertz, Sterns, and eventually Macy's to support her family while also caring for her ailing parents during an especially difficult chapter of her life. Providing her children with stability, education, and unwavering devotion was always her highest priority.
Sabina lived life with courage and curiosity. Her adventures included taking flying lessons and soloing in a Piper Cub, traveling the world, and-at 80 years old-cruising the Bahamas with Mike and Janice. In recent years, she made several heroic moves from Long Island, New York, to Windham, New Hampshire, to Raleigh, North Carolina, and finally to
Paramus, New Jersey, always drawing closer to family as life threw its inevitable curveballs.
Despite the hardships she faced, Sabina never lost her concern for others. Her most frequent questions were simple but heartfelt: "Are you okay?" and "Did you have enough to eat?" That was who she was-strong, resilient, and deeply nurturing.
In addition to her husband, Joseph, Sabina was predeceased by her daughters, Pat Mahoney and Therese (Mahoney) Sack, as well as all of her siblings: Charles Weber; Theresa (Weber) Heffernan; Sister Rita Weber, OP; and Sister Mary Weber, OP.
She is survived by her son, Michael, and her daughter-in-law, Janice McDonald. Also, four grandchildren: Timothy, Jonathan, and Dennis Mahoney and Richard Sack, and seven great-grandchildren: Sylvia, Bonnie, Reagan, Logan, Aisling, and Indiana Mahoney and Madison Sack, all of whom carry forward her strength, independence, and fierce love.
Sabina's legacy is one of perseverance, adventure, and an unshakeable devotion to family. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, from 9:00 am - 10:00 am at the Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 113 South Farview Avenue,
Paramus, NJ, followed by a 10:30 am Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Visitation R.C. Church, 234 N. Farview Avenue
Paramus, NJ. Interment to follow at Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.
