Salvatore J. Balsamo, father, beloved friend, and visionary architect, passed away peacefully on September 17, with his family and friends by his side. He left a lasting legacy of love, creativity, and resilience. Born in the heart of Chicago's Austin neighborhood to devoted Italian immigrant parents, Joseph and Angeline, Salvatore exemplified the American dream. He lived a life of hard work, passion, and an unyielding dedication to his craft.
From an early age, Salvatore knew that architecture was his calling. Determined to fulfill his dreams, he worked tirelessly to put himself through the University of Illinois, becoming the first in his family to graduate from college. His exceptional talent and perseverance led to a remarkable career, where he designed some of Chicago's most iconic landmarks, including the McDonald's global headquarters. His architectural work was a testament to his innovative vision and devotion to the city he loved.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Salvatore's most incredible pride was his children and grandchildren, who brought immense joy and purpose to his life. He carried the memory of his late daughter, Jeannine, in his heart, honoring her with a quiet strength that defined him.
Salvatore was an avid gardener, and his city gardens were featured in many publications.
In later years, Salvatore found peace and happiness in painting, uncovering a newfound creative passion that brought a vibrant meaning to his life.
Known for his love of good company and evenings spent in rich conversation, usually with a cigar, Salvatore was a fixture in Chicago's Gold Coast community. His warmth, generosity, and enthusiasm for life touched everyone who knew him. His stories will be remembered and retold for years to come.
Salvatore's spirit lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
