Salvatore Fericano Obituary

Salvatore Fericano
November 11, 1946 - May 23, 2022
Salvatore Martin Fericano, age 75, died early Monday morning May 23, 2022, at his residence in Cottage Grove, Oregon, after a three-year battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on November 11, 1946, in Boston, but spent his entire childhood in San Francisco's Visitacion Valley neighborhood in the family home on Teddy Avenue.
Salvi, as he was lovingly called by family and friends, was the oldest of twelve children born to first generation Sicilian Americans, Frank and Josephine Fericano. He was a member of the first eighth grade graduating class (1960) of St. Paul of the Shipwreck, and became one of the first boys from the school to enter St. Anthony's Seminary in Santa Barbara to study for the Franciscan priesthood. Salvi left St. Anthony's after his sophomore year and graduated from South San Francisco High School in 1964.
As a young adult he found work as a merchant marine, salesman, office clerk and house painter. In 1968, after purchasing his first guitar, he discovered his life's purpose and pursued his love of music. Over the next fifty years he wrote, performed and recorded songs under his stage name, Salvi Durango. Some of the musicians, artists and friends he collaborated with included Pete Seeger, Willie Nelson, Paula Nelson, Lady Bianca, Stephen Hart, Matt Hubbard, Guno Ronde, Robb Kidd, JT Holt and Brian Bekon.
Big, tall, long-haired, bearded and dressed in black, Salvi used his outlaw persona to channel life's joy, sorrow, anger and playful exuberance into clever songs that often masked personal pain. As the oldest in the family, he felt an enormous responsibility to help his younger siblings navigate the minefield of their parents' painful divorce in 1966. There was never any doubt about how much he truly loved his brothers and sisters and how much they all loved him in return.
Salvi was a courageous survivor of clergy abuse. Like so many others who were harmed as children, he tended his wounds in silence. His distrust of religion and all patriarchal institutions helped fuel his desire to find beauty and create art. In the end, it was music that lifted his spirit and a sense of humor that rescued him.
Salvi was preceded in death by his loving parents, Frank Paul Fericano and Josephine Angelina (Anello) Kimball, and by his sister and childhood side-kick, Josephine "Jody" (Fericano) DeWoody. He is remembered with love by his former wife, Merla (Asuncion) Fericano of Santa Rosa who was, in Salvi's own words, "an angel." His laughter will be forever missed by all of his ten siblings, Paul (Kathy), Anna Maria, Tony, Joe, Francesca, Frank, Nancy, Therese, Mary Rose and John (Yi).
He is lovingly remembered by his nephews and nieces, Darla, Sonshine, Harmony, Ben, Angelina, Kate, Tim, Josephine, Jennifer, Anthony, Michael, Sofia and Sean, and by his many, many cousins, Lorraine Nordin, Cathy Nordin, Evamarie Clarke, Ed Farinsky, Josephine Corso, Gina Corso, Dick Corso, Robert Anello, John Anello, Michael Anello, David Anello, Francesca Anello, Theresa Bellotti, Rob Anello, Barry Anello, Tony Anello, Jr., Steve Anello, Tamara La Rossa, Ralph La Rossa, Mary White, Bernadette Black, Tom Stryker, Catherine Stryker, Betty Stryker, Mary Wetmore, Frances Rose Danner, Gary Bonnici, Rosemary Clerici, George Clerici, and Tim Bonnici, his true blue pal.
In Boston, he is remembered with love and affection by his uncles, Tony Firicano (Peggy) and Richard Firicano (Franca), and countless more cousins.
The family is grateful to their sister, Francesca, who lovingly devoted herself to Salvi's care and well-being, particularly in his last weeks; to Merla, Salvi's former wife, who was always there; and to staff and hospice at Coast Fork Nursing Center in Cottage Grove, Oregon, who accepted him with kindness and compassion.
A private family memorial will be held in Ashland, Oregon. At Salvi's request, please consider a donation to the International Red Cross to assist and comfort the people of Ukraine.

Missing you everyday brother

Therese

November 16, 2022

Sal, I miss you by older brother, my Godfather. I miss your laugh and your humor, your voice, your singing. I miss hearing you say my name-"Treeeeeee-cccccc". I miss talking with you, even when we had our differences. I felt honored when you would come to me, your little sister, for advice or ask me what I thought about something that was important to you. I honestly don´t feel you are gone. I feel you now more as a gentle note on the guitar, a warm key on the piano. When I play Johnny Cash music, you are there, tapping your boot, while I pick up my 2 string bass and try to play along. I hear you laughing with me. You were born on Veterans Day. A day for heroes. You were and always will be my hero for never giving up. You dreamed big, not just for yourself, but for all of us. My big brother in black you are now robed in white and shining bright. Until we meet again, keep singing your songs-they are reaching us still I love you.
Your sister, Therese

So shook to learn of your passing. You were the big brother I never had since I was age 14. Always there to protect me; seeing me through countless challenging life events. I hold fond memories of our nightclub/music escapades; listening to you talk until the sun came up! Gifted songwriter, gripping storyteller, full of clever humor :) To use the lyrics of John Prestia and Dickey Betts...Nobody left to run with anymore. Nobody left to do the crazy things we used to do before. Nobody left to run with anymore.
I love you, Sal; and will miss you deeply.
My heart goes out to Merla and your family.

What can I say how about salvi or Sal as I called him for 77 years. I started hanging out with my cousin Sal when we were about 16 years old and we would ride up and down peninsula in his Ford Model T car that he had restored.   At the age of  23 we joined the merchant marines and shipped military supplies to Vietnam during the war. Throughout his life we kept in touch with each other.  Later in life when Sal was concentrating on his music we spent  time together traveling around to bars and nightclubs and he would play his music.  In our travels we had some interesting escapades, some good some not so good but we always managed to escape the not so good ones.                                                             In all the years I have known him he was always willing to help someone that needed his help.  He cared deeply about his family, his wife Merla and his country.  He will be truly missed.

ABOUT SALVI in Salvi´s Own Words

"I have been playing music for more than 35 years, and that´s a long time playing music. I have basically been playing small bars and taverns on the road, which makes that 35 years feel like a whole hell of a lot longer upon reflection. I suppose that I´m one of those musicians who been blessed and cursed with the need to ramble and attempt to make that into a meaningful musical profession. I have encountered a lot of characters, and I have been a part their stories, and they´re a part of mine.

I met some great people, some famous and some infamous. I made my way through San Francisco during the 1960s, I traveled up and down the West Coast, woke up with my fair share of headaches and hangovers, played in places that don´t even exist anymore, but all those stories remain; and that´s what came to inspire a good part of this album. I remember a quote by Woody Guthrie that struck a chord in me about having the need to inject yourself into the lifeblood of the people, there´s more to that quote, but I want to find it again to make sure I have his words correct.
When I was younger I was really moved and inspired the the work of Charlie Christian, Gabor Szabo, Huddie Ledbetter, Hank Snow, Bob Dylan, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton, Willie Nelson and Fats Domino. I have always had a taste for strong guitar and heartfelt music.

Y' know, these aren't all of my influences, they really go on and on. There's Poppa Charlie Jackson, Pete Seger, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggar, Buck Owens, who else here.... and Woodie Guthrie. I just want to take a moment and give these artists their due because it was their music, passion and their stories that had such a strong influence on me. Oh, hold on here let me get in Wes Montgomery and Marty Robbins as well. It's a bit ecclectic here, but in the under current of it all I have always had a deep appreciation of a "rootsy blues" tone.
Although I really have a wide array of influences, I suppose you could just say that I am a old fashion rhythm and blues sort of musician. There is a soul and tone of honesty that I have always appreciated."

We love and will forever miss you big brother

Salvi adored all his brothers and sisters. When I met him for the first time in 1972, as I was about to marry into the Fericano family, I liked him immediately, especially his smile which could be so disarming. This family bursts with love. If there´s a soundtrack here, Salvi helped compose it. Love and gratitude to all his brothers and sisters as we share our grief and celebrate Salvi´s life.
