Surrounded by his loving family, Richard “Sam” Albert, passed away on January 15, 2026 at the Hock Family Pavillion. Little Richard was 95 years old and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and cousin - he was one of a kind. Mr. Albert was born to Louisa Laws and Samuel Grover Albert on September 6, 1930 in Hillsborough. Richard lived a long and full life and was dedicated, hardworking, and deeply devoted to those he cared about. He experienced countless changes throughout his lifetime and met each with unwavering energy, resilience, integrity, and a strong sense of personal responsibility.

Mr. Albert began his career by serving his country in the US Army and then returned home and worked in the family-run business, where he developed the work ethic and skills that defined him throughout his life. He later joined the Department of Transportation, where he served with pride and commitment, ultimately retiring as a Road Maintenance Supervisor. His leadership and attention to detail earned the respect of coworkers and supervisors alike.

Even in retirement, Richard was not one to sit still. He continued working alongside the Wilkerson family, where he drove trucks and operated heavy equipment. Of all the machinery he handled, his favorite was the motor grader—a piece of equipment he mastered and took great pride in operating. Those who worked with him knew him as highly skilled, dependable, and always willing to lend a hand.

Richard also devoted time to the Historic “Occanechee Speedway” where he was a great supporter and member for many years.

Above all else, Richard was a family man. He cherished time spent with his loved ones and took great pride in his role as a husband for Peggy Albert for more than 50 years and then to Kathy Whitley until his death. He was the father of Larry Richard Albert “Ricky” (Debbie); grandfather to Sandra, JR (Kristy) Albert ; great grandfather to Hunter and Kynlee Albert. He also was a loving Uncle and Cousin to many others. He was a steady presence in the lives of his family, offering guidance, support, and a quiet strength that the whole family will miss.

Little Richard “Sam” Albert will always be remembered for his work ethic, his generosity of spirit, and the legacy of dedication and integrity he leaves behind. He will not be forgotten.

The family wishes to thank Orange County, Sheriff Blackwood, and the Orange County Parks and Recreation for making it possible for Little Richard to make one final lap around the speedway.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 22 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm and the Funeral will be on Friday, January 23 at 1:00 pm both will take place at Gospel Baptist Tabernacle located at 2646 Orange Grove Road, Hillsborough, NC 27278. Pastor David Bolick will officiate.
