Lawrence Albert Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Plummer Funeral Home - Augusta on Jan. 21, 2026.
AUGUSTA-- Lawrence James Albert, 83, passed away peacefully at the Togus VA Medical Center, on January 19, 2026, after a long illness.

He was born on October 22, 1942, in Gardiner, Maine, to Arlene (Wallace) and Richard Albert, and was a longtime resident of Augusta, where he spent much of his life working, raising his family, and remaining connected to his community.

Lawrence, lovingly known to many as "Jim," proudly served his country for six years in the United States Marine Corps. He is an honorary member of the Cony High School Class of 1961, having enlisted before graduating and already serving his country as a Marine in June of 1961.

Through the support of his Union, Local 327 in Augusta, Lawrence worked for many years, including a long career at International Paper in Jay, Maine. He was also a faithful communicant of St. Michael's Parish in Augusta.

In addition to his many accomplishments, Lawrence was known for his great sense of humor and his love of laughter. He was always joking and enjoyed making those around him smile. He loved to dance and was an excellent roller skater, talents that reflected his joyful spirit and love of life. One favorite family story recalls that after waking from surgery, he convinced the nursing team that he believed his name was Aloysius McGillicuddy. They truly thought something was wrong, until they realized he was only joking, a moment that perfectly captured his playful and mischievous nature.

He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Janet Albert, who passed away on January 26, 2017; his parents, Arlene and Richard Albert of Augusta; his brother, Thomas Albert of Manassas, Virginia; and his sister, Carolyn Baker of Ormond Beach, Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Isla Hamlin Albert, whom he married on November 29, 2020; his daughter, Renee Madore and her husband Andy of Cape Coral, Florida; his grandchildren, Brennan Madore and Brianna Madore of Cape Coral, Florida, and Emma Lapreziosa of Brunswick, Maine; his sister, Patricia "Cathy" Peters of Cape Coral, Florida; his stepdaughter, Tina Lamoreau of Gardiner, Maine; his stepson, John Lamoreau and his wife, Kelly, of Windsor, and their children, Samantha Lamoreau and Jacob Lamoreau; and his lifelong friend, Billy Dunn of Winthrop, Maine.

Lawrence will be remembered for his service to his country, his dedication to his work, his warm sense of humor, and his deep love for his family, especially his grandchildren who meant the absolute world to him.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Togus Springs for their compassionate care during Lawrence's short time there; to his team at the Togus VA, especially the Oncology Team of Katie and Brooke, who were always there to help at the drop of a hat; and to everyone from the American Legion Post #2, who so generously supported Lawrence and Isla throughout their journey, sitting with him, helping in countless ways, and offering constant friendship and care.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 27th at 11 am at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME 04330. Committal prayers with military honors will follow at the Maine Veteran's Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta, ME 04330. A celebration of life for all friends, family and all who knew him will be held in the Spring on Saturday, May 16th at 1 pm at Augusta Legion Post #205, 400 Eastern Ave. Augusta, ME.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Cony Alumni Newsletter, c/o Nancy Merrick, Treasurer, Cony Alumni Association, 82 Smith St., Unit 5, Augusta, ME 04330 and/or American Legion Auxiliary Post #2, 7 Legion Dr., Augusta, ME 04330.
