Sam Capshaw

Sam Capshaw, a beloved carpenter, dedicated husband, and cherished member of his community, passed away on July 16, 2025, at the Christian Care Center in Bolivar, Tennessee, at the age of 94. Born on July 2, 1931, in Bolivar, he lived a life grounded in hard work, family, and a love for the simpler things that brought joy to his heart.
As a self-employed carpenter, Sam worked diligently until the age of 75, showing an undeniable tenacity and a reluctance to embrace retirement. His hands crafted not just structures but memories for countless families who benefitted from his skills and dedication to his craft. He was a man who forever kept busy with odd jobs, reveling in the satisfaction of creation and the camaraderie that came with it.
Sam's spirit extended beyond the meticulous nature of his work. He found great delight in participating in vibrant square dancing, where laughter and rhythm brought together friends and strangers alike. The card game Rook captured many an evening, filled with the warmth of connection, strategy, and the occasional playful rivalry. In his later years, Sam embraced the art of beekeeping, a pursuit that allowed him to engage with nature's wonders while producing sweet honey that he generously shared with those around him.
A proud veteran, Sam served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, embodying a spirit of service and commitment that resonated throughout his life. His steadfast belief in community was mirrored in his active membership at Rogers Springs Church of Christ, a place where he gathered with others who shared his values and faith. Throughout his life, he remained rooted in Hardeman County, save for a brief six-year sojourn in Illinois. He met his wife, Peggy Harrison, while they were both working in a cotton patch together and they married on December 15, 1951, running to Mississippi. While coming back from getting their license, they pulled off the road in a rain storm, with the preacher in the front seat of the car. He turned around on his knees and married them right on the spot in Brownsville, MS, a testament that true love will conquer during any conditions.
Sam's legacy is woven into the lives of those he leaves behind. His devoted wife of 73 years, Peggy Harrison Capshaw of Rogers Springs, stood by his side through each chapter of their lives-partners in every sense of the word. Their family tree flourished under his nurturing guidance, including sons, Terry Capshaw and Linda of Parrottsville, TN, and Gil Capshaw and Theresa of Ripley, MS, who carry forward his values and spirit. Sam also cherished his daughter, Deena Tipton of Rogers Springs, a sister, LaDelle Davis of Searcy, AR, and a thriving clan of nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, with one 'on the way', who reflect his enduring legacy of love.
Sam now joins those who have passed before him, including his parents, William Matthew Capshaw and Bertha Melissa Ann Antwine Capshaw, and his siblings, Ruby Capshaw, Jessy Burgess, Ona Mae Hammons, Alice Brubaker, Mildred Gatewood, Jean Skelton, Joan Capshaw, Grady Capshaw, Lloyd Capshaw, and Bob Capshaw. Each of them has left an indelible mark on his memory, interwoven through the fabric of a life richly lived.
In celebration of a life well-lived, visitation will be held on July 20, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM, all taking place at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Middleton, TN.
The echoes of laughter, the warmth of love, and the joy of shared moments are the treasures Sam Capshaw leaves behind. His spirit will continue to guide and inspire those fortunate enough to have known him, forever shaping their lives with the gentle strength of his enduring presence.
