My mother, Frances Fearnley Stafford always spoke so highly of her younger cousin Sam and the fun they had as children in Myrtle Point. There was something about a "turret" in their grandparents house. , I felt like I knew him and my mother certainly held him in high esteem. Sorry for your loss.

Sam Dement defines the best of what any community and any family can offer. Sam loved his role as ambassador and spokesperson for his beloved Eckley Ranch. He defended a wonderful way of life which he shared with neighbors, nearby, far off. Sam represented the sturdy and worthy way of life established by newcomer settlers back in the 1850s, held their values and dreams firm for all his 95 years. My proud Oregon family salutes his life and honors his memory. Thank You, Sam. Your place in our hearts and in Oregon History is firmly established. May your model prevail.

Diane, Gary and family,

Our deepest condolences for the loss of the patriarch of your family. While he had a full, successful life, having to say goodbye is heartbreaking. You want to keep him visible and within reach forever! Store him in your hearts and he'll always be with you! Hugs, Bill and Ann Dolan

Had known Sam ever since I was an OSU Extension agent in Coos county many years ago. Always a gentleman, he reminded me of the Marlboro Man minus the cigarette.

I was visiting New York City about ten years ago. We had been out to the theater and in the elevator at the hotel, on our return, we met three women. They were dressed in fur coats and looked quite lovely. They asked us where we were from and I said Myrtle Point, Oregon. They squeeled with delight and asked if I knew Sam Dement. Of course, I said yes! They were from Salem, Oregon and seemed to know Sam quite well. In all of my travels, there is always a connection to home!

Always the gentleman.........I remember that cowboy hat and cowboy boots. Love cowboy boots to this day! Though he will be missed, his family can be proud of him and his many achievements. A fine legacy....
