Sammy Scott Obituary

Sammy Peete Scott, daughter of Dr. Don C. and Alice Peete, was born on June 18, 1928 in Kansas City, MO. She attended the Barstow School and later the University of Kansas, graduating with a Fine Arts degree in 1949. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.

Sammy was baptized, confirmed and married (1950) at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband James W. Scott of 45 years, brother Don C. Peete, Jr. and sister, Virginia Rickel.

Early on, Sammy wrote for the Women's Society Page of the KC Star, as well as reviewed many books. She was a dedicated volunteer for many, many years to St. Luke's Hospital as well as Planned Parenthood. She was a part of establishing and supporting the Dr. Don Carlos and Alice Peete Lecture Series at KU Medical Center.

As a lifelong artist, her home became a statement of the things she loved: flowers, art, gardening, animals and antiques. She traveled many parts of the world seeking unique objects of art and antiques, which she collected for her home and her antique shop, The Whitty Whatty. She was a lover of birds, cats and dogs which were a part of her family since her youth.

Sammy is survived by her 3 sons James Peete (Linda), Thomas Whiteford (Betty) and Edward English. She is the grandmother of, Addie (Scott) Perry (Braden), Thomas James (Siying), Andrew Jordan (Maddie), Rebekah Scott, Amanda Scott and Allison Scott. She is great grandmother to Briggs(Perry), Desmond(Perry), Elizabeth (Scott) and Louis (Scott).

"To live in the hearts of those we leave behind is to live on in their memories as a life well lived."

The family suggests contributions and support may be made to The Nelson-Atkins Museum or the Clendening Library and Museum KU Medical Center, History and Philosophy of Medicine.

The memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 11 East 40th St., KCMO, 64111, Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.

Yesterday

Sammy was the wife of my beloved boss, Jim Scott, editor of The Kansas City Star editorial page, and she was a warm, welcoming and funny hostess to all of us at their home many times. She was so talented and so bright and she and Jim were a wonderful, eclectic couple with many interests they loved to share with others. Her father, Dr. Peete, was a very respected physician and Sammy supported all of his healing efforts. As an individual she was a treat to know. She was also a great mom, a great wife and a great daughter and I'm so glad I had the privilege of knowing her. My condolences to her sons and their families.
