Samuel “Sam” Todd Owens, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and community pillar, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on February 3, 1952, in Middlesboro, Kentucky, Samuel was the beloved son of the late Ruby and Mack Owens, and brother to the late Robert (Bob) Owens. Samuel's journey through life was one marked by integrity, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved and served.
Samuel's educational path began at Powell Valley High School, where he graduated in 1969. His passion for agriculture led him to the University of Tennessee, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Business in 1973, followed by a master's degree. Education was not only his foundation but also his calling, as he began his professional career teaching agriculture at Powell Valley High School. His dedication to education and leadership skills eventually saw him serve as the Claiborne County Vocational Director.
In 1987, Samuel took a bold step, leaving the educational sector to establish Owens Grocery in Speedwell, Tennessee. A true community cornerstone, Owens Grocery was much more than a store; it was a place where friendships were forged and stories shared for over 30 years. Samuel's warmth and generosity extended far beyond the confines of his store, as he was committed to the wellbeing of his community in numerous roles. He served as a Claiborne County Commissioner, on the Claiborne County Board of Education, and as the Claiborne County Financial Director, demonstrating his steadfast dedication to public service.
Samuel will be fondly remembered as a God-fearing man whose faith was the cornerstone of his life. His love for his family was profound and unwavering, and he took immense pride in being a supportive and loving husband to his wife, Melinda Harbison Owens, with whom he shared 45 beautiful years. Together, they raised three wonderful children—Steven, Ben, and Shannon—instilling in them the values of kindness, hard work, and community service. Samuel's legacy lives on through his nine grandchildren: Lance, Gavin, Allie, Tucker, Elisa, Alexander, Samuel, Eli, and Parker, who will carry forward his spirit of generosity and love.
Samuel's life was a testament to the power of service, community, and love. He touched the lives of many with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to those around him. His gentle spirit and warm smile will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
