Samuel David Beigel, 90, died peacefully at Briarfield Place on Thursday, September 5, 2024, with his daughter, Sharon at his side.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Kathleen Callen Beigel. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary together on February 25, 2023, two days before Kay passed away. Kay and Sam had recently moved to The Inn at Glenellen after living 50+ years on the west side of Youngstown.
Sam was born on November 23, 1933, in Tarentum, PA, to the late Fanny and Simon Beigel.
Sam was a proud 1951 Tarentum Redcat graduate, standing out on the basketball team; he was known for his rebounds and his good set shots! He proudly served in the United States Army, making lifelong friends.
While attending Youngstown State University he worked at McKelvey's Department Store. After graduating from YSU, Sam worked for the USDA as an auditor with the Office of the Milk Market Administration for almost 27 years, retiring in 1995. He enjoyed his job and taught his daughters the value of a good work ethic. After retirement, he worked part time as a delivery driver for Briel's Flowers. He liked seeing customers' faces light up at the sight of flowers. For many years, he and his grandchildren volunteered at the soup kitchen and the hospital gift shops on Christmas, so others could spend the day with their families.
Sam loved his daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon (Mike) Kurjan of Poland, OH, Sheila (James) Foxworthy of Statesville, NC, and Suzette (Bruce – deceased) Moyer of Philadelphia, PA. Sam was exceptionally proud of his daughters and taught them lifelong lessons: Work hard and smart; take care of each other; keep your brain and body active; stay committed to a sports team through good and bad; and never pass up dessert.
Once he became a grandfather, he cherished spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren; Michael (Alyssa) Kurjan, Monica Kurjan, Dakota (Tessa) Moyer and Callen Moyer. He attended their school and sporting events, shared stories and relished being the best Papa. Sam was truly in his element when he was surrounded by them
After a heart bypass, Sam walked every year in the Mercy Heart Walk. He loved staying active, going to exercise at cardiac rehab and golfed until he was in his mid-80's, participating in the B'nai B'rith league since the 1970s, where he served as secretary and treasurer. He practiced his faith at Temple El Emeth where he was a member for over 60 years.
Sam was a dedicated reader, often finishing books days after he started them. He was a diehard Pittsburgh sports fan, watching the Steelers win six Super Bowls - four of them with his family, in the 1970s! That decade, the Pirates also won two World Series, confirming why Sam was such a devotee. He closely followed college sports, attending many YSU football and basketball games with friends and family.
Also, left to treasure his memory is his brother, Jerry (Estelle) Beigel, brother-in-law, Robert (Donna) Callen, along with other family in Michigan, California and Virginia. He was preceded in death by grandchildren, Brian, Marc and Jessica Kurjan.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at 11:00 AM, in Anshe Emeth Cemetery Chapel, 588 Granada Avenue in Youngstown. Family and friends may call 30 minutes prior to the service in the chapel.
Sam's family expresses sincere gratitude to the staff of The Inn at Glenellen and Briarfield Place for their loving care and support of their father; he truly was cared for with dignity.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to support fragile babies: Touched by Nathan Fund, Development Office at Akron Childrens Hospital Beeghly Campus, Building C, 6505 Market Street,
